Review:
First off, I will say that I loved this show and not just because I remember watching it three episodes as a time every Saturday night on the Action Channel (Which I'm not sure still exists), or because it was one of the first animes I watched that was not geared toward children. This series is action with a little bit of meccha, mixed with punk rock music, and a hint of romance. The plot is interesting both in the beginning and further into the series with the new threat/villian. The series begins with a somewhat monster of the week type of setup, the monster being robots known as Boomers, but quickly the audience begins learning more and more about each of the women and a bigger overarching plot takes hold. One of the chief complaints about this series is how unrealistic the technology is, especially in the second hardsuits that are developed. To address these critics I would like to assert a few notes here; BGC 2040 was released in 1991 and is meant to take place in 2040, 49 years later. Would anyone today be able to realistically imagine what technology we will have developed 49 years from now? My second point is that if you take a step back and look at the technology in a general sense instead of overanalyzing it based on its name, or material composition and appreciate the idea, then it is not quite so far fetched. Last but not least, get over it, if you are watching an anime and are so disturbed by the lack of realism, I believe you should find something else to watch. If you are worried about the implausibility of the technology you are missing the bigger picture. Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040 is an action series done in the style of many during the early 1990's; a mixture of meccha, music, action, and romance. It delivers in all respects and is definitely worth the watch. |
