"Drops of Jupiter"

Posted: July 15, 2008

Bulma awoke to the soft sounds of crying from the baby monitor, she sat up and stretched, ready to go in and rock her son until he slipped back to sleep. She noticed how bright the moonlight was coming in through the window and absentmindedly wondered if it had been the moonlight that had caused Trunks to wake up in the middle of the night. When she entered the room she picked up Trunks and sat in the rocking chair by the window. As she looked up at the window she could not help herself from thinking about Vegeta, where he was, what he was doing.

It had been six months since he had left in the spaceship/training simulator that he had been using and simply said that he was leaving to complete his training. She could not stop herself from wondering if he would even bother to return. Besides the fact that she had his son, she was not sure if it would make any difference, he had no attachments to anyone else on Earth. She had been so close to having the baby she had begged him to stay, something she felt ashamed of now, that she had even begged him despite her pride. She felt Trunks stir in her arms and took a deep breath. It was eerie how he seemed to pick up on whenever she got angry, especially when she was angry with Vegeta.

As she sat there holding Trunks and remembering the day that Vegeta had left; little did she know, that Vegeta was already on his way back to Earth. The navigation controls indicated that it would be another hour or so until Vegeta would arrive back on Earth. There were many things on his mind; the impending attack by the androids, the power he had achieved while out training, and though he would never admit it, he could not help himself from thinking about Bulma. In his mind he saw her eyes, her lips, and her smile.

Now that she's back in the atmosphere
With drops of Jupiter in her hair, hey, hey
She acts like summer and walks like rain
Reminds me that there's time to change, hey, hey

Trunks had slipped back to sleep and so Bulma put him back into his crib, but she felt wide awake. She clutched her robe tighter around herself and walked back to the window. The view of the city was directly in front of her but she looked up instead. She saw the stars and the brilliant moon and felt her heart skip a beat, to think that Vegeta was out there. As prideful and stubborn as she was she hoped that he would return.

Since the return from his stay on the moon
He listens like spring and He talks like June, hey, hey

She constantly asked herself why he would leave; he had everything here, even if he did not appreciate it. She also wondered what she would say to him if he did return, nonot ifwhen he returned. Did he miss her? Did he even think about her?

Tell me did you sail across the sun
Did you make it to the Milky Way to see the lights all faded
And that heaven is overrated

Tell me, did you fall for a shooting star
One without a permanent scar
And did you miss me while you were looking for yourself out there

Now that she's back from that soul vacation
Tracing his way through the constellation, hey, hey

As Vegeta piloted the craft and saw the control board indicating their proximity to Earth he questioned what everyones response would be when he returned. He was pretty sure that many believed that he would head out in to space and never return to the small planet that had caused him so much frustration. His pride and his competition with Goku would not let him run off, but was that the only thing drawing him back.

He thought of Bulma, one of the most interesting and infuriating females he had ever known. How she had worked away repairing the gravity simulator for him every time he broke it. When the simulator he exploded he had for a moment believed that had been his end, he had hardly expected to wake up in a bed covered in bandages with Bulma sleeping at his bedside. From that moment she had piqued his interests and he could not help but notice certain quirks about her personality.

She checks out Mozart while she does tae-bo
Reminds me that there's room to grow, hey, hey

Unfortunately, that was the biggest part of the problem, he had found himself paying more attention to her than to his training and he could almost forget the upcoming threat or even the goal of becoming a super saiyan when he looked at her. He was afraid of losing himself and all that he thought was important, when she became pregnant he decided to go away. He needed to complete his training and he knew what he needed to do, go out into space. What would she think of him now?

Now that she's back in the atmosphere
I'm afraid that she might think of me as plain ol' Jane

Bulma thought about Vegeta. From the moment that he had returned and began training she was combative with him and though he could physically crush her at any moment he never did. She suspected that he enjoyed arguing with her as much as she seemed to enjoy arguing with him. Her mother had teased early on that she was falling for him and she would always emphatically deny it, but in her heart she was already starting to care. Every time he injured himself she could not stop herself from wanting to be there to patch his wounds.

A few days after the simulator exploded, she had visited Yamcha and caught him with another woman. She had been with him so long that she knew she should have been devastated but instead she was only hurt that he had not told her he didnt love her anymore. When she returned home she went to Vegetas room and was surprised that he was actually inside and looking over plans for the new simulator her dad was working on. He seemed surprised to see her enter. She did not give him a chance to question or argue with her, she simply walked right up to him and kissed him. Though she was afraid to fall in love, she was not afraid of what she felt for Vegeta.

She remembered when she was a little girl and her dad

Told a story about a man who was too afraid to fly so he never did land

She knew it was supposed to encourage her to never be afraid but after being with Vegeta she found herself more afraid of her treacherous heart than she had ever been of anything else. A few weeks later she found herself even more confused and scared as she sat in a doctors office as he told her that she would be having a babya baby that would be part of her and part of Vegeta.

In a sense she was still scared, even if Vegeta returned there was no guarantee he would want anything to do with her or the son that they had created together. She wanted to ask him

Tell me did the wind sweep you off your feet
Did you finally get the chance to dance along the light of day
And head back to the Milky Way
And tell me, did Venus blow your mind
Was it everything you wanted to find
And did you miss me while you were looking for yourself out there

She wanted to convince him that they were a good match a couple who had passion for each other and someone who was there for him. Everything she could give him, she could present it all and never persuade him.

Can you imagine no love, pride, deep-fried chicken
Your best friend always sticking up for you
Even when I know you're wrong
Can you imagine no first dance, freeze dried romance five-hour phone conversation
The best soy latte that you ever had and me

All she could do was offer herself and hope it was enough, but her pride told her to stay strong. A voice in her head kept telling her that she did not need him, she had gotten through her pregnancy, Trunks birth, and all these months without him, but her heart was not as easy to convince.

Tell me did the wind sweep you off your feet
Did you finally get the chance to dance along the light of day
And head back toward the Milky Way

She closed the curtains at the window and looked in on Trunks in his crib. He had so many of her features and a few that were distinctly Vegetas. With a sigh she left the room closing the door gently and returning to her own bedroom. As she slipped underneath the blanket she wondered if Vegeta had accomplished all that he had wanted to

Tell me did you sail across the sun
Did you make it to the Milky Way to see the lights all faded
And that heaven is overrated

Did he become a super saiyan? Even if he did would it matter at all in the end?

Vegetas thoughts drifted towards Bulmas former boyfriend Yamcha. Up until Bulma had discovered she was pregnant he had been coming around the house trying to win Bulma back. No one thought he noticed the mans presence or all the gifts that kept arriving at the house from him, he told himself he had never been angry or jealous, but he had wanted the gifts to stop and they did when Bulma discovered she was pregnant. Would Yamcha have returned when he took off for space? With him out of the picture, would Bulma have been tempted to take Yamcha back?

He closed his eyes and sighed softly without realizing it and then became frustrated with himself. What did he care if she decided she wanted Yamcha? But he knew better than that, he knew he wanted her there waiting for him when he returned.

Tell me did you fall for a shooting star
One without a permanent scar
And did you miss me while you were looking for yourself

Bulmas eyes drifted shut slowly as she noticed the moon light getting softer in the room. She thought of Trunks; even if Vegeta never returned she had a piece of him that would always be with her, a reminder of the passion they had shared. She just wondered if he was lonely looking for himself out there.

And did you finally get the chance to dance along the light of day
And did you fall for a shooting star
Fall for a shooting star
And are you lonely looking for yourself out there

The End
