Fandom Discussion:

"Is Linna A Lesbian?"

Ok, so this will be my first blog that is not just announcing an update to the website and discussing something from a particular fandom. Since I am working on Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040 fanfic right now I got to thinking about couples for that series and how in many fan fics there is a tendency to present the character of Linna Yamazaki as a lesbian.

Why Peg Linna As A Lesbian?

There are a few important elements of the show which cause many fan fiction writers to peg Linna as a lesbian.

  1. Linna Lacks A Consistent Love Interest

Despite the man she goes out with at her parents request, somewhere around episode 10 of the television series, Linna is not presented with a love interest, or any particular person that she is interested in.

  2. Her Own Words

Though it can always be interpreted as mocking/non-serious Linna has a way with words and some of things that she says, especially to Priss. One of the best examples occurs towards the end of the series when they have just landed on the Sky Hook and Priss tells her to get up, calling her sleeping beauty. Her response is to say, "Without a kiss, no freakin way."

  3. Just A Hunch

Okay this may be a bit of BS reason but there are some who watch the show and just get the impression that Linna is gay. Most of these people think this because of the way she reacts with Priss and ultimately that is who she is most paired with in fan fiction.

I'm interested to hear your thoughts on the subject and if you also agree with this impression or do you think she just hasn't found the right man yet?

Thanks, Dannielle "Nova Starlight"

The answer to that question is "it depends". If you watch BGC 2040 with the English dub, then its 'probably'. If you watch the Japanese subs, then it becomes 'not likely'.

I guess you could say that I personally think its more 'probably' myself, however.
