Guinea pigs are neither from Guinea nor are they pigs (though sometimes I refer to them as such:).  Guinea pigs are small furry animals that come in a variety of colors and coat textures.  They can grow to be up to about 10 inches long and weigh as much as 1 1/2 lb.  Guinea pigs or cavies originated in South America where they were kept and bred for food.  They were brought to Spain in the 16th century by returning conquistadors.  They adapted to the new climate well and soon became popular pets for the wealthy.  Over time they spread throughout Europe and eventually to North America.  Through selective breeding new varieties developed to the guinea pigs we know today.

Guinea pigs have quite a following and are one of the most popular pets in the United States.  They are also exhibited in shows where they are judged on body type, coat quality, and other breed specific standards and awarded prizes.
