Internet Components

The Internet is a global network that consists of networks using TCP/IP protocols which allows them to interact with each other via gateways, providing users with electronic mail, messaging, remote login, file transfer, network news, the WWW, and other related services and tools. Here I refer to some components and explain their use.

Component List

World Wide Web

HTTP is an abbreviation for hypertext transfer protocol, the system of communication rules
for the World Wide Web, a network of electronic sites that are linked to form
a global electronic network. The web is rapidly expanding over the Internet
although it is an actual component of the Internet.

File Transfer Protocol

FTP is short for file transfer protocol. FTP is used for transferring files
over the Internet.

Telnet

Telnet is a program that allows you to log into remote computers using
terminal emulation. You can access and search databases such as libraries
catalogs and download information to your computer. It is also used to
communicate with others electronically.

E-Mail

Electronic mailing system that uses POP3 and SMTP Communication Protocols.

Usenet News

Usenet is a worldwide discussion system. It consists of a set of "newsgroups"
with names that are classified hierarchically by subject. "Articles"
or "messages" are "posted" to these newsgroups by people on computers
with the appropriate software and then broadcast to other interconnected
computer systems through a variety of networks.
