February 2002
27.02.2002 Eagles 4 PANTHERS 2
Crunch game at the Centrum Arena tonight, with both teams fighting to finish second in the league. Despite starting well the Panthers missed out on their best chance of securing second place in the Sekonda Superleague losing 4-2. Panthers led twice, and wasted a host of powerplay chances including a 5 on 3 in the last five minutes.

Tremendous first period of ice hockey with play going from end to end and good chances being created. Panthers opened the scoring at 6.54, a cross ice pass by Drouin found Wallenburg just inside the blue line he fired in past an unsighted Gage. At 12.06 Barry Niecker received 2 for slashing he wasnt happy with the call and got a 10 misconduct. On the resulting powerplay the home side got back on level terms as Molin found Silfwerplatz and from the top of the circle he fired a rocket of a shot past Lorenz on his glove side.

Eagles were caught with too many men, twice in the first 4 minutes, but kill of both penalties. A minute after the second call Lee Jinman was called for tripping and on the 4 on 4 a Molin shot goes through Lorenz put hits the post. At 28.17 the game boils over in the next 7 minutes we have two fighting and eight roughing penalties handed out. Crowe and Niecker started the ball rolling with 5 minutes then Jickling, Herbers, Risidore and Wood of the home team and Paek, Sjogren, Drouin and Norris for the visitors all went for roughing. Also squeezed in was a 10 minute misconduct penalty to Panthers Wallenburg. And the visitors got the go ahead goal at 32.43 as Moria shot past Gage assisted by Savoie and Carlsson.

Drouin was in the box for tripping two and a half minutes into final period and a minute later Schuler from the point makes it 2-2 as his shot is screened by Risidore to give Lorenz no chance. With 10 minutes remaining Silfwerplatz with another rocket gives the Eagles the lead for the first time. Three minutes later Schuler went for holding and Gage made a tremendous pad save to deny Hadden. Weaver then joined Schuler in the box on a 2+2 for accidental high sticks. Not long after Schuler came out Gordon went in for hooking to give Panthers a 5 on 3. With two minutes to go Sjogren was called for holding the stick, the Panthers pulled Lorenz but to no avail as Bauba found the empty net with 0.5 on the clock.

With Bauba finding the net so late on this puts Eagles into second place on goal difference over Nottingham. The Panthers final league game of the season see's them travel to League champions the Belfast Giants on Saturday for a game they must win if they are to finish second BUT first the must hope the Ayr Scottish Eagles lose to the London Knights on friday.

23.02.2002 Panthers 4 Manchester Storm 2
The Nottingham Panthers (2 games to play) moved 2 points clear of the Ayr Scottish Eagles (3 games to play) in the race for second place thanks to a 4-2 win over bottom placed side the Manchester Storm in their final home game of the regular league season.

The Panthers opened the scoring just past half way mark of the first period as Steve Moria scored on rebound following up the intital effort from Clayton Norris. The lead was increased on the powerplay as Patrik Wallenberg was given the easist of chances to net his 20th of the season following a clever move from P.C. Drouin.

The second period continued to go the Panthers way and they made it 3-0 after 25 minutes on a breakaway by Ashley Tait who scored his 6th league goal of the season. But six minutes later the Storm finally woke up and were back in the game as Dan Preston fired home on the powerplay to make it 3-1.

The Storm continued to pressure and there efforts were rewarded just 30 seconds into the third period as Pierre Allard scored on a weak backhanded effort. The Panthers finally sealed victory with eight minutes to go, as Barry Nieckar netted his 5th of the season by scoring on his own rebound after the intital effort was saved by Lyle. The Manschester Storm were not happy with the goal but it stood and they received a two minute bench penalty for unsportsmanlike Conduct.

16.02.2002 Panthers 3 Dusseldorf 2
End to end entertaining ice hockey. No first period goals, the shots were pretty even too with both goalies making saves throughout. One rebound off Lorenz looped up and over but he stood, spun round and grabbed it out of the air. Panthers captain Poirier ripped one from the slot which was tipped home by Christain Sjogren but when the home side coughed the puck, Mondt took it down the other end and equalised on his own rebound short-handed. A wicked bounce off the boards fell for Carlsson on the same powerplay who picked his spot to put Nottingham back in front. Then Italian international Bartolone pinged one off the bar from twenty feet to level once again. A rinklength move was brilliantly finished by Jinman off the right wing in the tensest of finales. The visitors pulled their netminder with 1.27 to go but the Panthers drew the curtain on a well-deserved victory against one of the top clubs in Europe.
14.02.2002 Panthers 1 Iserlohn Roosters 2
Panthers had the brighter start and with Fendt off for interference the home side ripped in half a dozen good quality shots on goal but Iserlohn netminder Parent kept his clean sheet in tact. The game then flowed end to end and by the half way mark in the period the German side was starting to gain the momentum upon which they capitalised when Fitzgerald turned in a rebound. The period continued to flow both ways but Hakkinen became the busier keeper. An eventful second period saw Nottingham start well but ex-nhler Parent kept them at bay and a sweet three-on-two attack was finishd by Fitzgerald into the roof of the Nottingham net to double the DEL's lead. The ISL team came back though with a bouncing bomb through traffic from Moria and a string of chances as the period closed. Chances at both ends in the third. Nottingham took their time-out with 1.12 to go and a face-off to come to in the Roosters territory. Hakkinen was pulled, two shots taken but no luck for the ISL.

11.02.2002 Protest Over Tait GB Call
NOTTINGHAM Panthers' chairman Neil Black was today making a firm protest to the league after chief executive Ian Taylor "ordered" Ashley Tait to play for Great Britain in a challenge game with Belfast last week.

With the crucial Challenge Cup semi-final against Ayr last Saturday, Panthers asked for Tait to be released from international duty in order not to miss two key training sessions or run the risk of injury.

But apparently Tait was told he must play because Ayr's Jonathan Weaver would also be playing. But Weaver refused point-blank and stayed with his team to prepare for Saturday's game in Nottingham.

9.02.2002 Panthers 4 Eagles 4 - Agg: 4-7
The Nottingham Panthers' Challenge Cup dreams are over for another season despite their best performance of the season. The first leg deficit was just too much for them to overturn. The Panthers hopes were nearly dashed as early as the warm up, when netminder Danny Lorenz limped from the ice. He did however start the game but was clearly struggling.

The Panthers came out flying and took the lead after just two minutes with Ashley Tait firing past a stunned Gage. The Panthers continued to press in search of more goals but it was the Eagles who scored to level the game as Byram slipped the puck under Lorenz from close range.

The Panthers started the second as they did the first and regained the lead on a 5 on 3 powerplay folowing penalties to Bristow for Hooking and Herbers for Cross Checking. It took the Panthers just 10 seconds to take advantage of the 5 on 3 as Jimmy Paek blasted home his first goal since returning to the Panthers. The Eagles again levelled the game on their own powerplay chance following a penalty against Drolet for Cross Checking, Ian Herbers the scorer.

The Panthers again suffered more penalty trouble as Gerg Hadden was given a five minute major penalty for tripping following a hit on Eagles netminder Gage but the Eagles advantage lasted just two minutes following a 2+10 penalty against Shaun Byram for Checking Jimmy Drolet from Behind and it was during the 4 on 4 play that the Panthers regained the lead, thanks to an excellent finish from Calle Carlsson.

The Eagles levelled the game for the third time again on another powerplay chance just three minutes into the third period following a dubious roughing penalty against Clayton Norris, The Eagles scorer was Dody Wood who fired home from the top of the circle. The Panthers took the lead for the fourth time just a minute later as Steve Moria scored on the powerplay, the Panthers continued to press and called a timeout with 2:24 to go and still trailing by 2 on aggregate, following the timeout Lorenz was pulled.

BUT they blew any chance they had with 2:07 to go, as they were called for having Too Many Men on the ice (7 Skaters). With Lorenz still pulled Shaun Byram fired home his second of the night into the empty goal to tie the game for the fourth time and seal a 7-4 aggregate win for the Ayr Scottish Eagles, who now face the Belfast Giants in the final.

The Panthers must now concentrate on finishing second in the league (and the hopeful invite to play in europe, that goes with it) and the Playoffs, which on current form the Panthers stand every chance on winning.

8.02.2002 Former Panthers
Two former Panthers forwards were in the news this week. Jarret Zukiwsky who has joined his third club of the season and Jason Jennings who made a welcome return to the Guildford Flames line-up following injury.

Jarret Zukiwsky
Jarret has joined the Baton Rouge Kingfish in the East Coast Hockey League following his release from Corpus Christi IceRays of the CHL. The Kingfish are his third team of the season and the ECHL is the third different league he has played in this season. Jarret started the season alongside Jimmy Paek at the Anchorage Aces in the West Coast Hockey League before joining the Corpus Christi IceRays of the CHL.

Jason Jennings
Returned to the Guildford Flames' line-up last weekend, after an absence of almost four months and what a comeback it was, as he scored twice in Guildford's victory over the Hull Thunder and took just 9 seconds to score the next night as the Flames beat the Fife Flyers.

5.02.2002 Former Panther Named Player of Week
Ex-Panther Jason Weaver has been named Co-WCHL Player of the Week for the week ending Feb. 3. The Fresno Falcons Winger shares the honor with Zdenek Vanc of the Long Beach Ice Dogs.

In two games this past week, both against the Bakersfield Condors, Weaver recorded one goal and six assists. During Friday night's contest in Bakersfield, he notched three assists in addition to the game-tying goal with 1.6 seconds remaining in the game to help the Falcons erase a 5-2 third period deficit. Weaver continued to punish the Condors on Saturday night back in Fresno by registering three assists in the team's 5-1 victory. For the season, Weaver has terrorized the Condors to the tune of four goals and 13 assists in eight games.

3.02.2002 Bees 2 Panthers 4
This was the Clash second versus third tonight at the Hive and the Panthers came to into the Hive to win this one and they punished the Bracknell Bees for their errors they were two up inside the first 6 minutes through Ashley Tait & Ex-Bee Jimmy Drolet. The Bees pulled one back on the powerplay when Steve O'Rourke slotted home a loose puck.

This seemed to wake the Bees up and they started to pass the puck around, but the Bees could not keep up with the Panthers. Jinman scored again for the Panthers from close range restoring their two goal lead. The Bees pulled another back on the powerplay again with Jimmy Paek in the penalty box when Turner slotted home assisted Ftorek & Peddle.

The third period was make or break for the Bees and they could have capitalised on a number of powerplay chances but the Panthers scored again with just over seven minutes left through Wallenberg. The Panthers dominated the final five minutes and held the Bees Scoreless during the third to win 4-2 and make it a 4 point weekend for the first time this season.

Attendance: 1,710
Man-of-the-Match for Bracknell Bees: Brad Peddle
Man-of-the-Match for Nottingham Panthers: Lee Jinman

2.02.2002 Panthers 4 Eagles 1
The Nottingham Panthers produced one of their best performances of the season tonight as they beat the Ayr Scottish Eagles 4-1, The game marked the return of defenceman Jimmy Paek who recently re-joined the Panthers from Anchorage. The Panthers started with Lorenz in nets, Paek and Drolet on D and Drouin, Jinman and Wallenberg as forwards.

The Panthers started the game well and took the lead after 3 minutes as Drouin turned the puck past Gage and forty seconds later it was 2-0 as Carlsson backhanded a shot past Gage. The Panthers then had over four minutes on the powerplay following Bauba's attempted spearing on Pope which saw Bauba given 2+2+10, and following a high stick penalty to Herbers the Panthers had over a minute and a half of 5 on 3 advantage but the Panthers could not make it count.

The second period was a different story as the Eagles came out flying and reduced the lead just a minute into the game as Jickling redirected a shot from Crowe past Lorenz, however this would be the only time they would beat Lorenz, who made 16 saves during the period. The Panthers regained their two goal lead thanks to Patrik Wallenberg's 18th goal of the season with four minutes to go in the second period.

The third period was a pretty even affair but it was the Panthers who scored the only goal of the period on a breakout as Norris followed up Drouin's effort on goal for his 4th goal of the season following a great pass from Lee Jinman.

Attendance: 4,537
Man-of-the-Match for Nottingham Panthers: Ashley Tait
Man-of-the-Match for Ayr Scottish Eagles: Ryan Risidore
