An absorbing game, both sides so evenly matched and so confident on and off the puck. A patient skillful game throughout with Giants upping the tempo in the final session. Sandrock almost won it for them when he rang the far post from a face-off on the right. Seven minutes later Bobyck skated into the zone, went round the back and Brown's shot from the right wing (point) was deflected into the far corner. Brebant claimed his second successive goal and Laing his second successive shut-ouyt as Giants hearts were broken.

Belfast forced a face-off in the Sheffield end with 41 seconds remaining, lifted their keeper but managed just one shot. Laing pulled off two big saves in the first period, enjoyed a quieter middle session but then shut the door on Riehl & MacDonald, with Sandrock and Johnson also wondering how to beat this keeper. At the other end Cavallin was solid throughout, a tremendous triple stop from Brebant at 48.40 the highlight.

The Bees got straight back into the game after the break when Bauba hit the post at 20.45. The Knights scored at 21.22 after an Arhlroos when his inital shot was saved by Watkins but it trickled behind into the net. The Bees restored the two goal lead when Spring's shot rebounded off of Troffimenkoff and into the net. Then at 37.17 Maxwell & Burke of the Knights and Bauba & Delisle of the Bees decided to have a scuffle this resulted in a powerplay for the Knights which they converted at 38.35 when Hoad scored.

The final period belonged to London with them attacking and make the Bees work hard for the puck. The Knights scored shorthanded at 41.10 when Kolesar scored and this game was tied,the Bees tried everything but the Knights stopped them and overturned the play. The Knights got the winner at 51.16 on the Powerplay, the Bees called a timeout at 58.46, elected to pull Watkins and the Bees attacked. The Knights then hit the post twice and had shot stopped on the line and the final buzzer.

In the second Macdonald scored after a great pass from Ward at 27.04. This period was dominated by the giants and the Bees were made to work to get possesion of the puck and with a great move down the ice Strutch poked the puck into the open net after Ciccarello played Ryder out of his pads.

The Giants scored their 3rd at 49.29 in a quiet final session and thought they had scored the winner at 53.30, but it was disallowed as Macdonald had picked up a Interfernce Penalty, the Bees could not find a way through in the powerplay which followed and this one headed into Overtime.

Kirton nearly won it for the Bees in the opening seconds of overtime, but he was thawted by the Giants defence,the Bees broke down several Giants attacks and the Bees were getting the better of the Giants.

Steelers at full strength whilst knights were without the injured Nate Leslie and Vezio Sacratini. After three good efforts on their opening powerplay opportunity Steelers (previously 1 for 44 on the road) finally passed Trofimenkoff as Dutiaume scored his 6th of the season by tipped in the puck with the heal of his stick. Carlsson almost made it two as his shot hit the underside of the post at 14.50.

The second period saw Steelers score another powerplay as Brebant forced home the puck as Knights were caught on a breakaway.

Steelers controlled much of the final period outshooting London 11-7. Knights called a timeout at 59.24 and withdrew their goalie for the extra forward to no avail.

Outstanding netminding, a solid defense and no-nonsense goals showed the Northern Irish fans what their team was capable of as they beat off Norwegian league leaders Valerenga IF 3-0 before thrashing French top side Rouen Dragons 8-0 the night after. Although a draw against Austrian Linz would be enough for the Giants to progress to the final stage of this European competition, they played an outstanding game against the Black Wings and held a 100 per cent record after a 5-3 win. Belfast will now face Swiss HC Lugano in their first game of the finals and a win would see the Giants play either Swiss HC Davos or Russian Lokomotiv Yaroslavl in this knock-out round.

The Super 8 finals will be played from 10-12 January in a knock-out stage in Lugano, Switzerland and Milan, Italy where the three third round winners meet the seeded five European top sides on their road to glory. Only a win will see a team progress to a higher stage as losing will result in playing for the 7th and 8th or 5th and 6th place.

The participating teams in the Super Final are: HC Davos (SUI), HC Lugano (SUI), Lokomotiv Yaroslavl (RUS) and Belfast Giants (GBR) in Group M. HCJ Milano Vipers (ITA), Jokerit Helsinki (FIN), Keramin Minsk (BLR) and Slovan Bratislava (SVK) in Group N.

Tickets for fans of participating clubs will be available from their representatives from 9th December 2002 until 15th January 2003 when any left unsold will go on general sale. Great Britain international Jonathan Weaver is to join Hull Thunder after moving from the Scottish Eagles. Weaver replaces Mark Bultje who is going to play in Holland.

* Paddy Ward
Paddy Ward has now signed for the Edinburgh Capitals. Paddy, who was previously on loan to the Murrayfield side was a great asset last season and the much-improved Capitals side will welcome Paddy officially to the Team.

London opened the scoring after 94 seconds as Hoad set up an easy tap in for Mansi. They increased the lead as a Kolesar wrist shot hit the top of the net with such a verocity that the goalie�s water bottle was dislodged off the top of the net.

Bracknell had four shots in period two and scored twice, their first a disputed strike from Spring when the Knights felt there was a player in the crease. London reclaimed the lead as Hoad picked up a loose puck to score. Their fourth from Burke came on a shot from the centre of the face off circle to the keeper�s stick side.

Bracknell came out strong in period three, Ceman cutting the deficit to one 47 seconds in. Bees pressure finally told as they tied the game when on a 5 on 3, Ceman hitting his second. Knights� Gerry Adams and Bees� Scott Kirton sat out a 5 minute major for fighting during this period with the Bracknell player getting an extra 2 minutes for elbows.

Overtime saw London have the better of the early exchanges but neither side could get the puck in the back of the net.

The Play Off Championship Qualification Round will incorporate all five clubs, each playing each other twice home and away.This will take place between 17.2.03. and 30.3.03. inclusive. The top four clubs in the Qualification Round will go on to the Play Off Championship Week-end to be played on April 5th and 6th 2003.

Further details of that week-end will be released in due course.

The owners confirm that the club will continue to operate in a league next season.

As a consequence, Belfast Giants will replace them in the ISL Challenge Cup Semi-final Tournament against the Nottingham Panthers on 8.12.02 at Sheffield Arena.

ISL respects the tough decision that the "Friends" had to take last night (11.11.02.)

Certainly all ISL Clubs would have preferred to have another club to continue their fixtures but it also recognised that unless clear financial structures were put in place, the risk of that club collapsing again before the end of this season would do nothing to attract local fans and sponsors for the future, hockey in general and not least almost certainly have consigned the rest of the ISL clubs to a premature end this season.

The costs of running any professional sports team are not to be underestimated, not least in hockey, and without the financial largesse of others, generally cannot hope to be accomplished, most certainly to be competitive within an ISL spend such as it is.

The one positive to take from this is the face of the future of professional hockey in the UK.

ISL has recognised for some time that with only seven clubs it was on borrowed time. Although there was the realistic prospect of an eighth and ninth team joining the league they are based upon Arena's yet to be built and realistically probably two to three years away. A time too long to sustain a meaningful league of any substance.

The ISL clubs with our partner organisations are now looking to the future for next season in order to preserve what they perceive to be the essential elements of the entertainment on the ice to attract fans and with an overall sporting structure with strong links to grass roots hockey. Without these key elements, the sport will continue to struggle, from crisis to crisis. We all desperately need a period of stability and steady sustained growth in a competitive environment.

It is achievable.

The Great Britain team was made up of 7 English Premier League, 14 British National League and 1 Superleague player. Only 5 of the 22 man squad had played for the senior team abroad and there were only 2 British/Canadian passports on the team.

Pool A nations Slovenia and Ukraine both beat the young British team, but they bounced back to shut out host nation Hungary in the final game. Chris McSorley was delighted with the team effort and said "What a monumental effort the guys gave us the whole tournament! Outside of bringing home the Silver Medal 2 years ago in Slovenia, this has been one of my proudest moments in Ice Hockey!"

Former Panthers defenceman Brent Pope ( now Solihull MK Kings) was named Defenseman of the Tournament.

Friends of Manchester Ice Hockey set themselves in conjunction with the ISL a target figure of �100,000 by 6pm Monday November 11th. The fans and Friends of Manchester Ice Hockey succeeded in obtaining pledges in excess of �50,000. After due consideration, it was felt that whilst the response was overwhelming, it did not give a clear mandate to pursue ISL hockey for the remainder of the 2002-2003 season. Given the response, the Steering Group of Friends of Manchester Ice Hockey remain confident that the original gross target figure of �150,000 can be exceeded over a longer, more realistic timescale than was available.

The Steering Group unanimously agree that the fight to have elite level ice hockey in Manchester will continue, with a new target date being the start of the 2003-2004 domestic season. The Steering Group are Friends of Manchester Ice Hockey are committed to contacting every person who pledged individually to outline the options available and to ask how they would like their money to be used. A further public meeting will be announced shortly, through the website www.stormfans.co.uk), hotline (09068 888660 - Calls charged at 60p a minute), Into The Storm forum, and the press to present a vision for the future.

Then the game proper Facing off as normal at 18.00. The Bees run into problems early on when Mcbain was sent to the box for hooking at 01.10. He came out of the box and skated down the ice and found Ciccerello but was denied by Laing in the Steelers net. The Steelers struck first when Darling scored at 04.09. The Bees then dug in and had a great chance at 13 minutes when Burgess hit the post.

The Bees start the 2nd with a short powerplay chance. The Steelers survived the nineteen seconds penalty kill at the beginning of the second. The Bees then found the back of the net at 20.57 when Peddle netted from close range after some neat play with a great pass from Arkiomaa. The bees doubled their lead four minutes later when Ceman scored at 24.41. The Steelers then started to put the pressure on the Bees and scored again at 31.44 through Dutiuame.

The third period was action packed and the game went end to end with some great plays by both teams.Neither team could really find a breakthrough with both netminder being tested constantly and equally they had chances as well, this one was heading for overtime. The overtime period was nothing but electric, both teams had chances to bury the puck in the net and the Bees were working hard to break through the Steelers defence which was strong.The result was a fair one with both teams matching each other.

Although there was no first period scores both teams were putting on a game of end to end hockey for the full house Odyssey crowd. The first period though belonged to the netminders as both Laing and Ryder showed good early form.

One minute into the second period the opening goal of the game finally came when Kory Karlander won the puck at the blueline he skated past two Sheffield players before hammering home past Laing. Curt Bowen then hit the post 40 seconds later before the Giants extended their lead when Schulte was one on one with Laing, after a super Matos pass, and the big giant made no mistake. The Steelers then got themselves back into the game when Jason Sessa shot home an assist from Kent Simpson.

The Steelers came out the third period on the attack and got a deserved equaliser on 47.04 when Marc Dutiaume scored after good work by Rhett Gordon. Both teams then went in search of the go ahead goal but no avail as the bgame went into overtime.

The Steelers broke the hearts of the giants once again as they scored with 42 seconds to go in the overtime period when Gordon knocked the Puck past Ryder.

Bowen came to British hockey 2-seasons ago when he joined the Belfast Giants, he now joins the Surrey based side from the Superleague�s Scottish Eagles who�s business ceased trading this week.

Cardiff Devils have today signed Canadian winger Jason Rushton on two weeks loan. Devils coach Glenn Mulvenna will have talks with Rushton over the next fortnight as to whether he will come to Wales for the rest of the season.

Bultje made his debut in the home defeat by Guildford last Saturday and will be in the line-up for this weekend's back-to-back Findus British National League games against Coventry Blaze, the first at Hull Arena tomorrow night (face-off 5.45pm).

"Scottish Eagles look to have reached the end of the road after management advised players to find other clubs. The squad and coaching staff were told the news after three days of talks failed to come up with a rescue deal. Eagles� next two home games against the London Knights and Sheffield Steelers are off and MD Bob Zellar said "My company which runs the Eagles, will cease trading".

Canadian businessman Bob Zellar has put the future of the Scottish Eagles in the hands of franchise owner Bill Barr. MD Zellar admitted that plans to make ice hockey in Glasgow a big sport had failed, adding " I am hugely disappointed by this". "I have informed the Superleague about the situation and I have had discussions with Mr Barr�s people about the future. It is now up to them"

Scottish Eagles MD Bob Zellar has paid tribute to the players after being forced to let them leave to find new clubs. He said "I had full co-operation of the players in the promotion of this club. Our last home game against the Sheffield Steelers in the challenge cup saw 2,700 fans paying to watch, which proves we were on the right road."

Sheffield have only themselves to blame in this wide open game as Bees kept skating all night long and helped themselves to the points. Both golaies looked solid throughout the opening period. Ex-Steeler Dan Ceman broke away short-handed down the left, ignoring O'Rourke inside to shoot instead. Carlsson shot from distance through a crowded zone to open the scoring. Gordon pounced on a big rebound off the back boards to catch the goalie unawares.

Prior stacked the pads to make the save, but the puck fell nicely for Ciccarello to put Bees on the board. Chances at either end before Bobyck got in low out front but shot wide of Greer's left post. A break down the left was finished in style by Levins. Then Arkiomaa skated through from the right for a quick reply. Seconds later greer had a lucky escape as he managed to roll onto the puck as it rolled along the goal-line.

A quiet final session turned on its head when Ceman then Kirton both given bags of space to pick their spots. Sheffield called a time out seconds later. Steelers upped the tempo but lacked cohesion. Even when Hurley sat his two minutes Greer only had to make 2 stops. Bees easily ran the clock down for two welcome points

An Investigation has taken place into the events during the above game when Christian Gosselin of Bees and Dennis Maxwell of Knights had an altercation while still in the penalty box.

They were given a Game Misconduct at the time,this penalty has been upgraded to a Match Penalty for bringing the sport into disrepute.

They have both been Suspended for 1 game and fined �250

An Automatic Review of the Match Penalty awarded to Maxwell during the London Knights versus Sheffield Steelers game has taken place with the following result. Maxwell was given the Match Penalty for alleged gouging when involved in a fight with Steelers Dion Darling.

He has been given a 1 Game Suspension and fined �250.

It is with the greatest of sadness and anger that I have to write this statement.

Following a truly amazing response to the public fund raising activities Manchester Storm was to make a presentation to the ISL detailing a positive proposal to secure the future of Manchester Storm to play in the ISL. With full co operation from SMG offering a reasonable and workable rental structure we felt confident that our proposal would be well supported. However, as a precursor to the proposal a discussion was held amongst the league on different matter. The outcome and implications of this discussion did not allow me to present my case and withdrew my proposal on moral grounds, which the league fully concurred with.

I now see no other course of action but to put the club into the hands of my professional advisors, with a view to putting the club into liquidation. All funds pledged in cheques or by credit card will be destroyed and any cash will be returned immediately. I understand there will be an appeal to raise funds to assist the players and off ice team, I hope the goodwill that has been shown can now be continued.

I have spoken to all the team, coaching and office staff. They fully understand the decision I have taken. I wish at this point to thank all the fans, sponsors and well wishers who have assisted over and above all expectations.

Gary Cowan

As can be seen from the media release made by Gary Cowan, owner of Manchester Storm, he is placing the club into the hands of professional advisors with a view to putting it into liquidation.

At yesterday's (5.11.02) ISL Board meeting, Mr. Cowan was put into an impossible position as it was revealed that another ISL Club was in financial difficulties and, although steps were being taken to address the problem, there was no guarantee that it could continue to the end of the season. It is self evident that losing a club or clubs during a season will have a marked effect upon the financial stability of the league itself and the other clubs who are members. Had Mr. Cowan, with that knowledge, invested the monies raised from fan's pledges to keep Storm a going concern and subsequently a significant change in circumstance occurred, the monies may become lost and all the goodwill of the fans to date wasted.

Mr. Cowan then concluded that he had no alternative but to place the club into the hands of his professional advisors. The ISL Clubs present at the meeting endorsed, with obvious great reluctance, his decision believing it to be the right one in all the circumstances.

ISL has been approached by a third party to discuss the possibility of keeping a team in Manchester in ISL for the remainder of the season under a new management team. No reliance should be placed on the talks that are taking place as many hurdles need to be overcome, not least of which is the time factor. Frankly it is too early to say if they will come to fruition, but rest assured ISL will not stop until all alternatives have been explored.

The prospect of having no professional ice hockey in the Greater Manchester Area and for that matter no ice pad, when Altrincham Rink closes, is too terrible to contemplate.

The Manchester Storm fixtures against Scottish Eagles on Thursday 7.11.02. and London Knights on Sunday 10.11.02. are now postponed.

In the meantime all Storm fans are asked to retain their interest in hockey by either visiting other ISL venues or alternatively local clubs at Altrincham, Blackburn, Bradford and Flintshire.

The remaining ISL Clubs then gave an assurance that they intended to complete the current season even if it will present difficulties regarding the number of games required to fulfil their own business plans and contractual obligations.

ISL Clubs recognise that the future of professional hockey in the UK at this playing level is in serious doubt and have been exploring other alternatives to the current structure for some time.

All ISL Clubs hope that they can survive this testing time so that there is a brighter future.

The Second was dominated by the Giants. But the Bees took the lead at 32.42 when Ciccarello scored. The Giants dug in deep and started to show the Bees how to play when they scored four unaswered goals, Rod Stevens at 33.40 & 36.11. Schulte at 37.23 from close range and Reihl on the Powerplay at 39.59.

The Giants came out in the third and piled the pressure in the Bees and the Bees were made to work hard for the puck. The game seemed to lose some of its sparkle of the first two periods. The Giants made the Bees pay for their mistakes when Reihl scored at 54.05. The Bees were unable to find a spark to finish some great moves.

An explosive opening period saw three fights and a total of 77 penalty minutes called. It resulted in the expulsions of Knights Denis Maxwell (on a match penalty) and Steelers Dion Darling with an automatic game for second fight. London took the lead through Bronilla on the power play. Knights second came as Gerad Adams took the puck down the left wing centered to Ian McIntyre who scored on a one timer. After both coaches were called to a meeting with the referee in the intermission the game carmed considerably and both teams played hockey.

Steelers Sessa missed a sitter at 26 minutes. Knights Aronson broke his stick on a shot which forced a great save from Laing. Sacratini hit Knights third from close range.

Steelers fightback began at 49.29 as Gordon snapped Lilljebjorn's shut out. Blanchard missed a one on one chance at 53 minutes. William caught Lilljebjorn unsighted with a shot high to his glove side. Sheffield took off their goalie at 58.45 and then called a timeout at 58.54. When the puck was deflected out by a Steelers player the face off was called outside the blue line, Simpson not happy with the call received a 10 minute unsportsmanlike conduct call.

London took the lead through a solo effort from Chris Slater 144 seconds into the game. Knights Paul Rushforth forced home the puck with a set up play from Ahlroos and Sacratini who was icing in his 250th ISL game. Knights had a goal disallowed at 13.35 when the referee had already blown for a penalty before the puck crossed the line.

A goalfest with six in the second period as Giants came out fast MacDonald was left free to score. 24 seconds on a well placed strike from Ward leveled the score. Knights powerplay saw Hoad hit home a rebound off the goalie. A fast break allowed Sorochan the opportunity to take a superbly taken shot with a man down. Leslie left the game after coming out the worse in a fight against Kuwababa. Sacratini tied the game with Knights second powerplay of the game.

The final period saw the match held up as a plexi panel had to be replaced after Stevens hit the game winner at 48.17. Rushforth received a ten minute misconduct for abuse of official after disputing a too many men call on London. Knights withdrew Trofimenkoff with 55 seconds remaining to no avail

Storm owner Gary Cowan spoke about the problems that have beset him from day one of his ownership of the club and outlined that in order for the club to survive, a figure of �150,000 was required within the next three to four days. He indicated that he had already received pledges of support in the region of �60,000 and so the target figure was in effect �90,000.

He also confirmed that as well as David Longstaff having left to join the Newcastle Vipers in the Findus British National League, netminder Stevie Lyle and club captain Ivan Matulik had signed to play for their former club in Cardiff and that defenceman Rob Wilson had requested his release in order to take up one of three possible options in the FBNL that he is considering. Mr Cowan indicated that he bore the players no malice and understood their predicament in moving to find jobs elsewhere in order to safeguard their short-term income while the Storm look to fulfil the contractual obligations.

After a long question and answer session that also included contributions from Sheffield Steelers owner Norton Lea and press officer David Simms, Mr Cowan announced that fans could donate a sum to the fighting fund in exchange for a bond. In the event that the figure required is not reached, all funds donated would therefore be returned.

Almost immediately a queue of fans formed wishing to pledge donations to keep the Storm alive and fighting and a sum in excess of �15,000 on the night was raised.

There is still a long way to go to reach the necessary target figure, but the fight to save the Storm is well and truly underway and further pledges of financial support can be made directly to the Storm office by telephoning 0161-737 0444. or by email to Wendy James: [email protected]
