Tonight
This is one of those romantic love songs I wrote for my wife that came out of a childhood memory. In this case I remember laying on the grass in my backyard when I was about eleven, looking up at the Milky Way and trying to comprehend how, even before the universe existed, something was there to occupy time and, even if there was a brick wall at the end of the universe and nothing on the other side, that nothingness would go on and on forever. It was mind boggling then, and still is now.
We can lay
We can laugh
We can sing
We can talk
Lying there and looking at the Milky Way
Me and you
On the grass
Watch the stars
Make their midnight pass
In the breeze
Hand in hand
Put our little hearts at ease
Underneath the starlit trees
Tonight
To the moon
Take my word
It doesnt have to be in tune
Just converse
Think out loud
Figure out the universe
It doesnt have to be rehearsed
Tonight
Fathoming the timelessness of time
Looking past absurdities of yesterday
Capturing the moment in rhyme
You and me
Here and now
Tomorrow is no guarantee
So look up at the starry sea
Is there any place youd rather be
Tonight
