Wayward Son of Mine

I wrote this song a few years ago when I didn't know if my oldest son would ever be close to me again. His teenage years were quite difficult for the whole family. Our relationship has improved greatly since these words first came to me and the last verse takes on a special meaning to me today.

November sun through a leafless tree brings it back to me
Every reason why I failed you time after time
It reminds me of the Autumn morn, of the moment you were born
And it breaks my heart, oh wayward son of mine

If only some Spirit would let me go back and do it over again
I swear by the Heavens Id be a better father this time
But I know its a fantasy, a wish that can never be
And it breaks my heart, oh wayward son of mine

But in my dream youre home again with true delight
The wall between us gone forever more
I look at you and suddenly the world is right
Where the wall once was is now an open door

I remember the days of your youth when you were still close to me
I look at the photographs and recall a happy time
Theres a picture of us singing a song, but somewhere it all turned wrong
And it breaks my heart, oh wayward son of mine

And in my dream youre home again with true delight
The wall between us gone forever more
I look at you and suddenly the world is right
Where the wall once was is now an open door

And I wonder if you ever dream the dream that I have dreamt
And I wonder if we can be close again some time
But whatever the future brings, only know one thing
Ill love you always wayward son of mine

And whatever the future brings, only know one thing
Ill love you always wayward son of mine
