| Volney Paul Mooney, Jr. Sept 15, 1899 - Aug 2, 1945 Our Founding Rodent |
| "The patriotism of the soldier of yesterday is equally deep-rooted today. The service man
stands, in the event of an emergency, as the last line of defense in the protection of this
nation," Commander Volney P. Mooney, (right), legal counsel for the congressional committee
investigating un-American activities, tells the Commander-in-Chief. It is worth noting
that FDR was also responsible for the economy act, of which every Trench Rat has
heard. Volney P. Mooney was the first Imperial Golden Rodent of the National Order Of Trench Rats.He later became Commander of Chapter No. 5 in Los Angeles, Department Commander of California, National Judge Advocate for eight years and was elected National
Commander of the DAV in 1934. To him and to all of those living and dead who
contributed over the sixty years of its existence, this history is dedicated. Their names are
inscribed in the archives of this Order, they were tried and found true to their trusts, to
their obligations and their own consciences.
We know that membership in this Organization inspired all of them with the incentives to
further the welfare of our disabled comrades and there will always remain in the minds
of all members those immortal words.
.. "Semper Idem Et Semper Fidelis" Volney P. Mooney, the founder of the N.O.T.R. was also a plank-owner in the D.A.V., see the relevant section from the United States Code, cited below: United State Code TITLE 36 - PATRIOTIC SOCIETIES AND OBSERVANCES CHAPTER 6A - DISABLED AMERICAN VETERANS U.S. Code as of: 01/26/1998 Sec. 90a. Corporation created The following persons, to wit, Robert S. Marx, of Ohio; William J. Donovan, of New York; H. G. Lightner, of Kentucky; A. B. Powell, of Alabama; Glenn E. Miner, of Arizona; George H. H. Pratt, of Arkansas; Volney P. Mooney, junior, of California; (etc.). Our beloved founding rodent went on to become the National Commander of the D.A.V., and he invited FDR to attend the national convention held on 17-20 of July, 1935, in New Haven, Connecticut. Roosevelts' letter of response is reproduced in it's entirety on "Founder Page 2" below. Just click on it to have a look. And it seems almost certain that Trench Rats founder Volney P. Mooney Jr. came by his fraternal interests very honestly. His father, Judge Mooney was well known in fraternal circles. He was affiliated with Patmos Lodge No. 97, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons; El Dorado Chapter No. 35, Royal Arch Masons; El Dorado Commandery No. 19, Knights Templar; and was a past master of his lodge, past high priest of the chapter and past eminent commander of the commandery. |
