The Montreal Coalition Against War Hysteria and Racism has
called an emergency demonstration for Monday, October 8 at
1pm at the U.S. Consulate on St. Alexander and Rene Levesque.
In an October 7 statement, the Coalition states,"The
Coalition Against War Hysteria and Racism calls on people
of conscious to denounce the horrible escalation of terrorism
with Canada's support of the U.S. and British bombing of Afghanistan.
"The impoverished people of Afghanistan, who were not
responsible for the terrorist attack on September 11, are
suffering greatly. We have already made refugees out of hundreds
of thousands -- as Afghans have started fleeing their homes
and cities three weeks ago in fear of this bombing. They sleep
out in the cold night without shelter and then spend the hot
days with little food or water. The U.S. ordered Pakistan
to close its boarders and deny survival aid. Since the media
coverage ignores the refugees, we have no information of thousands
who are already dying of starvation, exposure and now bombs.
"Terrorism is the targeting of civilians -- even if the
victims are called 'collateral damage.' If Canada stands 'Shoulder
to shoulder' with the U.S. as the Prime Minister stated today,
instead of shoulder to shoulder with the Afghani people, then
our country is part of the problem -- and not the solution."
The Coalition said that it seeks a solution that "Repudiates
blind vengeance with a commitment towards global solidarity,"
"Honestly faces the root causes of the injustice that
breeds the hate and vengeance towards the U.S." and "Make
reasonable and just changes that will eliminate those causes."
