Calgary citizens call for a peace rally
to commemorate International Day of Action for Global Peace and Justice

The Calgary Coalition for Peace and Anti-Racism formed on September 29 at a gathering of Calgarians who came to Memorial Park to protest the war hysteria and racism being pushed by the U.S. ruling circles since the events of September 11 called for a rally for peace and against racist attacks on October 12 at Memorial Park. The rally was called as part of the International Day ofAction for Global Peace and Justice.

People at the gathering spoke about why they wanted to see peaceful solutions to the conflicts between nations and peoples. They denounced the racist attacks being promoted by the U.S. and Canadian states. Many spoke of their opposition to state terror unleashed by the U.S. in the last century and particularly since the Gulf War. All those present agreed to mobilize for a rally every Friday at Memorial Park against war and racist attacks.

The Coalition has taken up as its goal to provide a forum for people to: "Unite for peace and peaceful solutions to end violence; Demonstrate in solidarity with others around the world our opposition to war and the killing of more innocent people; Promote harmony and acceptance within our local communities."

In the flyer for the Ocotber 12 rally, the Coalition poses the questions: "Do you believe that NATO must be stopped from carrying out a new, wider war in the Middle East?" and "Do you believe that all forms of racism and discrimination must be eradicated?" and called on everyone to join in.
