As a daily user of Adobe Photoshop, I've gotten quite use to a few very handy keyboard shortcuts. Not surprisingly, Corel PhotoPaint's default shortcuts are very different from those built into Photoshop. Here are few shortcuts (also called accelerator keys) I added to make the transition from Photoshop to PhotoPaint easier and faster. This process of editing accelerator keys is identical between Draw and Paint.

Make a list of useful shortcuts
After playing around with PhotoPaint for a while, I discovered there were a handful of keyboard shortcuts I used in Photoshop that I sorely missed. To customize PhotoPaint, I made a list of the shortcuts I wanted to add or change. Here are the commands and the shortcuts I use in Photoshop that I want to use in PhotoPaint:

Zoom In CTRL+'+'
Zoom Out CTRL+'-'
Levels Command CTRL+L
Hue/Saturation/Lightness CTRL+U
Curves Command CTRL+M
Pan (Hand Tool) Spacebar

Select each command and assign shortcuts
Similar to the toolbar example, the left-hand side of the dialog box contains all the commands to which keyboard shortcuts can be applied. We'll start by assigning shortcuts to "Zoom In" and "Zoom Out." You'll find these commands under the "View" group.

After selecting the "Zoom In" command, click inside the box marked "Press new shortcut key:." Press CTRL+'+' (use the '+' on the numeric keypad). PhotoPaint spells out the shortcut you just pressed. Click the Assign button. You should also add the other plus sign to the shortcut. Click again in the "Press new shortcut key:" box and press CTRL+'='. (There is no need to add SHIFT to this shortcut. In Photoshop, you just press CTRL'=' to zoom in.)

Be careful what you change
Ungroup has no comparable command in Photoshop. But CRTL+'U' is certainly one of the most commonly used shortcuts in Draw. If you begin to learn PhotoPaint, you'll quickly discover that the object metaphor PhotoPaint uses is a wonderful way to work with bitmaps. It's like using layers, but PhotoPaint's objects can be manipulated in many of the same ways objects can be manipulated in Draw. Grouping and ungrouping PhotoPaint objects is a common activity, and CTRL+'U' is a very sensible keyboard shortcut for that command.

As a compromise to maintaining similarities with Photoshop, consider using CTRL+SHIFT+U for a keyboard shortcut.

Also, you will discover that the the spacebar is not a valid keyboard shortcut by itself. I use CTRL+SPACE instead.

Save your changes
After you've made your changes, click the OK button. You'll be asked to save your new set of keyboard shortcuts. To make your new accelerator keys the default, save them over the current PhotoPaint accelerator file.

Go crazy!
You know, the "Zoom In" and "Zoom Out" shortcuts will work in Draw, too! You should give them a try. It saves a lot of trips to the Zoom tool. There are already some standard zoom shortcuts built into function keys F3 and F4, but the CTRL+'+/-' shortcuts I learned for Photoshop are so natural to me now.

Advantages
Create and Edit Images Faster
The right set of keyboard shortcuts can make editing Paint and Draw files fast and enjoyable. You'll quickly discover what functions you need instant access to.

Shorten the Learning Curve of New Apps or Versions
As I said further up on the page, put to use what you already know. Shortcuts from other programs and versions are there for a reason--they work. Transfer the ones that are most useful to PhotoPaint and Draw.
