Church of Saint Carolus - Borromeus |
![]() |
| This church was designed by members of the Jesuit Order. The building of this Baroque styled church began in 1615 and was finished in 1621. Many of it's paintings and sculptural decorations were designed by P.P.Rubens. Its first patron saint was Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the order. After the abolition of the order in 1733, their goods were sold to the public. The church was then used as a place for religious teaching and got Carolus Borromeus as a new patron Saint. The church became an independent |
| parish in 1803. The origional church interior must have been dazzlingly beautiful as it used to be called " the marble temple". On July 18th 1718 the church was struck by lighting. The 39 ceiling paintings by Rubens went up in flames. With the restorationwork carried out in the 1980's they attempted to rebuild it's 17th century interior. Here you can also visit the lace museum.
