There where the O.L.V Kathedraal is now, there used to be a 12th century parish chapel. It was rebuilt twice untill it was a big church. In 1352 they started building the cathedral around the church. In 1481 the last remains of the church were demolished. The building of the 123 metres high tower was finished in 1521 and made it the biggest Gothic construction in the Netherlands. However, straight after that , Emporer Charles V laid down the first stone for what was to be an extension. The work was brought to a standstill in 1533 after a fire. Because of the fire and the plundering over the centuries, there is not alot left of the origional furniture. After 20 years of restoration, the cathedral is looking absolutely magnificent, decorated with fabulous altars, paintings, statues and stained glass windows.
There are still services being held and there are regular performances of the music which dates back centuries. In the summertime there are guided tours given every day in English, French, German and Spanish, the tours are free of charge.
