Maritime Museum

Homepage
This museum has been in a little castle called "the Steen" (the stone) since 1952.  It was propably built in the 13th century and got it's name because it was one of the first buildings made in stone. It was renovated the first time in 1520 during the reign of Charles V. Between 1549 and 1823 it was used as a prison. In 1862 it became the Archeological museum. New renovations were started in 1889 and a Neo-Gothic wing was added to the building. Next to the castle you see the 19th century storage halls, in there are several vessels that belong to the Maritime museum . At the entrance of the museum you can see the large statue of a legendary person called Lange Wapper. He's the Antwerp version of the Dark Age's boogieman.  It was made in 1963.
