| British author and advocate for social reform, born in Scotland (1812-1904) |
| Never try to reason the prejudice out of a man. It was not reasoned into him, and cannot be reasoned out. Progress, of the best kind, is comparatively slow. Great results cannot be achieved at once; and we must be satisfied to advance in life as we walk, step by step. To think we are able is almost to be so; to determine upon attainment is frequently attainment itself; earnest resolution has often seemed to have about it almost a savor of omnipotence. |
