| FRANKLIN DELANO ROOSEVELT |
| A conservative is a man with two perfectly good legs who has never learned to walk. Above all, try something. Every time an artist dies, part of the vision of mankind passes with him. Government cannot close its eyes to the pollution of waters, to the erosion of soil, to the slashing of forests any more than it can close its eyes to the need for slum clearance and schools. If in other lands the press and books and literature of all kinds are censored, we must redouble our efforts here to keep them free. The function of Government must be to favor no small group at the expense of its duty to protect the rights of personal freedom and of private property of all its citizens. The only thing we have to fear is fear itself. The test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much; it is whether we provide enough for those who have too little. When you get to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on. |
