| Protagoras it was who first left facts out of consideration and fastened his arguments on words. He it was who first invented the sort of argument which is called Socratic. When asked how much educated men were superior to those uneducated, Aristotle answered, "As much as the living are to the dead." When asked why he did not become a father, Thales answered, "Because I am fond of children." When the people applauded him wildly, he [Phocion] turned to one of his friends and said, "Have I said something foolish?" |
