| A committee is a thing which takes a week to do what one good man can do in an hour. A conservative is a man who is too cowardly to fight and too fat to run. Art is not a thing; it is a way. Be pleasant until ten o'clock in the morning and the rest of the day will take care of itself. Do not take life too seriously. You will never get out of it alive. If you can't answer a man's argument, all is not lost; you can still call him vile names. If you suffer, thank God! --it is a sure sign that you are alive. It is a curious fact that of all the illusions that beset mankind none is quite so curious as that tendency to suppose that we are mentally and morally superior to those who differ from us in opinion. Live truth instead of professing it. Logic is an instrument used for bolstering a prejudice. One machine can do the work of fifty ordinary men. No machine can do the work of one extraordinary man. The greatest mistake you can make in life is to be continually fearing you will make one. The love we give away is the only love we keep. The only foes that threaten America are the enemies at home, and these are ignorance, superstition, and incompetence. There is no failure except in no longer trying. This will never be a civilized country until we spend more money for books than we do for chewing gum. To escape criticism--do nothing, say nothing, be nothing. We work to become, not to acquire. |
