Music, not being made up of objects nor referring to objects, is intangible and ineffable; it can only be, as it were, inhaled by the spirit:  the rest is silence.

Some men are so selfish that they read a book or go to a concert for their own sinister pleasure, instead of doing it to improve social conditions, as the good citizen does when drinking coctails or playing bridge.

Teaching is not a lost art, but the regard for it is a lost tradition.
