THE WORLD OF TWO - PART 2

She was intelligent. It had surprised both Dr Williams and Dr Ross and even herself but Josephine Lillian Potter was intelligent. She could read, she could write, her math was good and she knew things, she supposed, she really shouldnt have known. But she did. Perhaps because she was intelligent and young (female and beautiful to add) Dr Williams did agree with Dr Ross (Peter) that she belonged. Apparently so did the board and administration of the hospital where Peter and Dr Williams worked. One thing she realized, above all, was that she was fortunate and that Dr Williams and Peter were compassionate.

After her recovery, Dr Williams found Joey room and lodging with a nice, elderly lady who enjoyed the company. Joey helped out in the hospital cleaning, changing sheets, checking on patients. Dr Williams and Peter also hired her in a secretarial capacity for their private clinic. They paid her which was unexpected because Joey worked at the hospital for free.

Both doctors delighted in teaching her and furthering the education she had never officially had. There were interesting things like literature, art, science, history, politics and philosophy among an array of areas to learns from. Her mind was filled and overwhelmed. They took it slowly although she grasped things quickly.

Mrs Florence Matthews, the elderly lady whom Joey boarded with was also teaching her things. Things like sewing and cooking, personal grooming and manners. She was an old fashioned lady with a kind heart who enjoyed her tea and a chat. Joey found it was nice staying with Mrs Matthews. She was what Joey had imagined a grandmother to be like, whenever Joey had briefly pondered the idea of family.

It was a strange turn of events that Joey never quite understood but was still grateful for. This was a completely different world from the one she had known previously and Joey doubted if she would ever truly belong but she had begun to accept her situation, just as the people and her situation had begun to accept her.

I dont suppose youve heard of the orphan waif that Dr Williams and Dr Ross have adopted? Anna Evans asked.

What? Jennifer Lindley cried. Do tell!

Apparently Dr Ross found her on the border between the good part and the bad part of town. Goodness knows what Dr Ross was doing there in the first place. Anyway, Dr Ross took this girl to the hospital and treated her. It almost turned into a complete scandal and total disgrace for the hospital until Dr Williams stepped him. Somehow, and I cannot possibly imagine how, Dr Williams managed to make this girl into a charity case for the hospital. Although there are far better people to be charitable towards then those no ones.

My goodness! Andrea McPhee (also known as Andie) exclaimed.

To make a long story short. Anna continued. This nobody of a girl has become wonderful PR for the hospital and now daddy is going to hold a function in her honor which happens to be the night that daddy has informed me that Pacey will announce our engagement.

Ohmigod!! Ohmigod!! Ohmigod!! Andie and Jen cried.

You are such a lucky b/itch. Andie sighed enviously. Imagine being engaged to Pacey Witter.

Its going to be absolutely perfect. Anna purred. All the journalists will be there as well as anyone whos anyone. All the important people there to hear about my engagement to Pacey Witter. I couldnt have organized it any better myself.

Even Senator Jacobs and his wife. Jen added a little slyly.

Tamara Jacobs is a washed up old hag. Pacey only slept with her because everyone said it was impossible to get her to open her legs. So of course Pacey had to prove them all wrong. And of course Pacey succeeded. Tamara Jacobs is nothing in the big scheme of things even taking into consideration that she is married to Senator Jacobs. Pacey can go screw any slut he wants because in the end its going to be my finger that wears his ring. Anna stated.

And that is the most important thing of all. Andie agreed. Youre so lucky you managed to catch Pacey. One because he is Pacey Witter. And two, you dont have the problem of finding a suitable husband. At the moment Im trying to decide between Dawson Leery and Will Krudski. Who do you think is the better option?

Will Krudski. Anna decided.

Why? Jen asked curiously.

Although Pacey is best friends with both Dawson and Will, Will and Pacey have this bond. Besides, if I couldnt have Pacey Id take Will or Jack. But Jens already grabbed Jack. Anna explained. What Im trying to say is that Will has better prospects. Dawson may have mummy and daddy to help him out but Wills the type that will make himself be someone. You need to cash into that Andie. Go for Will.

Anna, you are just so smart when it comes to these type of things. Andie gushed. Where would I be without you?

Anna smiled basking in the glow of praise. Now I just have to find the perfect dress for this function. It is of course going to be my night.

Standing out Frederics, an exclusive beauty salon, Joey watched as Mrs Matthews gave instructions.

I think hair, skin, nailsin factmake it the whole works. Mrs Matthews decided.

The consultant nodded and examined Joey critically whilst taking down notes.

Mrs Matthews turned to Joey, Ill be going now. Theres no point in me staying and waiting since this could take several hours at least.

Joeys eyes widened in horror at the prospect of being let alone with these strange people and their so-called instruments of beauty.

Oblivious to Joeys apprehension Mrs Matthews continued her speech. Maybe afterwards you might get some of these nice people to refer you to a good dress boutique. Youll be needing a dress for the function and of course accessories. You should have enough money as well as the credit cards. If there are any problems whatsoever dont hesitate to give me of Dr Ross or Dr Williams a call. Ill see you sometime tonight. Okay?

Before Joey could muster an answer Mrs Matthews had exited the salon leaving Joey alone with the smiling consultant.

So where do we start? Joey asked nervously.

Follow me. The consultant replied.

Hours of treatment later, Joey sat in one of the salons high chairs waiting for her hair to be cut.

Hi.

Joey turned to see a blonde sitting besides her.

Youre new here arent you?

Yes. Joey replied.

I could tell because Im a regular customer here. The girl explained. In fact I practically live here. Goodness! Wheres my manners?? Im Abby Morgan.

Nice to meet you Abby. Im Joey Potter.

Why does your name sound so familiar? Abby asked. Dont tell me. Itll come to me. Let me seeyoure not the daughter ofnoyou wouldnt be her because you look much too intelligentmaybenothats not it either.hhhmmmI know! Youre Joey Potter! The girl that the function is being held for. The girl that Dr Ross and Dr Williams saved.

Yeah. Thats me. Joey admitted shyly, not used to being recognized.

Well, Ill be! Youre practically famous! And here I am sitting next to you.

Im not really famous.

But you do have one of those big functions being held in your honor. And that is certainly something. Abby stated. So I see youre getting the full treatment. All in preparation for the big night, huh? Have you gotten your dress yet?

Umno

Well thats fantastic. I havent bought my dress as yet, either. We can go dress shopping together once were finished here. I know some of the best boutiques in town. Well buy you a real nice gown.

Joey listened to Abby continue to chatter, sometimes adding in her own comments. It was nice to have a friendly person to speak to, to help her through all this confusion like makeup and buying dresses. Plus it also meant that Joey would have a friend to talk to during the function. Someone to advise her on the proper protocols and to help Joey navigate through this unknown world of society.
