Guess what Jo? Pacey asked excitedly. You discovered what your brain is for? Brain? Whats a brain? I only function on hormones and heart when Im around you, remember love? How could I forget! Joey laughed. Guess again. Pacey insisted. You were abducted aliens. Actually they came but I told them I was currently busy and could they please come back another day, preferably making an appointment with my secretary. What you mean is the aliens came, saw and decided they could do better. Joey corrected Pacey. So are you going to keep me guessing or are you going to tell me your news? I got it. You got it!?! Joey squealed in delight. I got it! Pacey affirmed, boyish mirth filling his voice. Awww honey, Im so proud of you. I did good, didnt I? Very good. So do I get a reward when I get home? Maybe. Joey answered coyly. By the way Im coming home early. Mr Holbrock virtually gave me the afternoon off. I have a few things I have to do first but I was thinking, if you can, come home early and we can celebrate. Well dress up and go to some nice fancy restaurant. Are you asking me out Mr Witter? Only if the answer is yes. Yes. Then Im asking you out. Pacey stated. You did amazing sweetie. Joey whispered softly, her voice filled with love and pride. Jo. Yes? I love you. Love you too. Pacey heard the click of the phone and grinned. He couldnt wait for the day to end so he could go home to his wife. Sighing a little, Pacey opened the folder. Time to familiarize myself with your case, Mr Oliver. What type of man are you? Although I suppose Ill find out soon enough.
The media were already crawling across the NYPD station by the time Pacey arrived. Squeezing through the crowd he entered the station and after various identification checks among other things Pacey was admitted into the holding room where Mr Oliver was contained. Frank Kubziki was already there, deep in conversation with Mr Oliver. Pacey critically examined their client. Mr Oliver was a nondescript caucasian male, around his fifties, who appeared rather calm despite his predicament. At first glance Pacey would say that Mr Oliver had been a handsome man who had kept his looks, amicable and charismatic, definitely intelligent. He was everything Pacey expected from a rich, high flying, corporate businessman who was respected in the circles he traveled. On the other hand, based on his first impression, Mr Oliver was everything Pacey was not expecting. Because although Pacey was, on one level, meeting with a successful businessman he was also, on another level, meeting with a man who had been accused of brutally murdering his children and his wife. Mr Oliver. Pacey greeted. My name is Pacey Witter. I am a partner at Holbrocks and Simmons and will be overseeing the progress of your case. Frank Kubziki will be handling your actual case along with other lawyers in our firm. Mr Kubziki has excellent credentials as criminal lawyer and I am positive that you will find Mr Kubziki more than adequate. Im just here to ensure that you are satisfied with everything that is happening with your case. If you have any concerns or you simply want to discuss anything at all, please dont hesitate to contact me or Mr Kubziki. As I was stating before. Frank Kubziki continued after Pacey. These are very serious charges. We have a hearing tomorrow where a judge will rule on bail. Due to the nature of the charges it is unlikely that you will post bail however we are going to argue your general good character, your flawless record before this and if were lucky you may make bail. Mr Oliver nodded understandingly. In the meantime Ill be going through your case thoroughly and looking at everything youve told me so far. As Mr Witter stated if theres anything you need, dont hesitate to contact us. Frank continued. Thank you. Mr Oliver replied with remarkable composure. Well talk to you soon. Pacey promised before he and Frank exited the room. So what do you think? Pacey asked Frank. Professionally, Mr Oliver is a whole lot of trouble. And personally? Pacey probed. And personally I have no opinion at all. Its the sanest option I have in this kind of job. Defending criminals who are more often than not guilty...you learn to put it in a little box that is labeled work. You dont get overly passionate about things. You just think youre doing your job, youre doing whats necessary for the greater good of justice. Thats a warning and advice to you Mr Witter. Pacey. If were going to be working together you might as well call me Pacey. Fine. Im known as Frank by the way. But what Im telling you Pacey, dont let things become personal. Its not worth it. By the way, congratulations on your promotion to partner, Pacey. Frank called before he and Pacey separated ways. Mulling over Frank Kubzikis words for a little Pacey paused for a moment. Then shaking his head to rid himself of such thoughts Pacey hopped into his car and headed home. It was time for Pacey to go home and celebrate his promotion with his beautiful wife. |
