FRIENDSHIPS - PART 7

Pacey Witter was decided. He was totally, absolutely and officially insane. A diamond ring was not the perfect Christmas gift for Joey. Of course that knowledge did not seem to alter the fact that Pacey could not help but look. Each glittering, luminous rock seemed to beckon Pacey everywhere he turned. He fled the jewellery store only to find himself drawn to another and another and another. It was getting to the point of ridiculous. At this rate there was no way Pacey would ever find the perfect gift for Joey. Which of course was when Pacey saw it. In a small, antique shop where history hung delicately in the air, somehow Pacey headed straight for it without even knowing what was drawing him.

Nestled amongst jewellery of all sorts was the most elegant, intricate diamond solitaire ring set in silver. It was simple but beautiful. It was neither showy nor ostentatious and yet Pacey could not keep his eyes off it. He could already picture the ring on Joeys fingers, settled comfortably around her finger as if it belonged. The compulsion to buy it then and there was so strong that Pacey had no idea how he managed to resist temptation. But resist temptation Pacey managed to do, literally dragging himself away from the store.

Until minutes later.

When he asked the woman at the counter to look at the ring Pacey knew that this was it. He was going to buy the ring, no matter how much it cost. Upon closer inspection of the ring Pacey could see a delicate, tiny design of two hearts entwined on the silver. And the sizeit would be a perfect fit. No adjustment would be needed. It was as if the ring was made for Joey and was waiting for Pacey to buy it. Pacey bought it without thinking, there was no choice in the matter. He carefully pocketed his purchase knowing that it only represented a dream. Pacey would not be giving it to Joey. Not for Christmas. Not anytime soon. At least not in reality although in Paceys dreams Joey was already wearing the ring. Which of course meant that Pacey still had to find Joey a Christmas present. Pacey sighed, the euphoria of his recent purchase fading as he set about his task.

~*~*~*~*~*~

So you are coming to Capeside for Christmas right Jen?

And miss a New York Christmas?!?! How could you even suggest such a thing Joey!!!

I assume Ill see you in Capeside then in a few days. Joey replied dryly.

You bet!! I cant wait to see Grams and of course to taste some of Bodies delicious cooking once more.

I know!! And I really want to see Bessie and Alex. Alex has grown up so much since I last saw him, its unbelievable!! Makes me realise how old we actually are.

So you and Pacey are driving down there? Jen asked rather casually.

You know we are. Whats your point Jen? Joey asked suspiciously.

Oh nothingits just that I heard that you Pacey have a good track record with road trips.

What are you talking about??!? You know thing between Pacey and I are purely platonic.

Except for that one time.

Joey blushed and tried to brush it off, Well that one time didnt really count.

How could it not count! Joey you slept with Pacey!! In the more than friends kind of way!! And how come I only found out about this recently?!?

First off you were never meant to find out. And it doesnt count because it was a slip.

Okay explain to me how you can accidentally have sex with Pacey?

I didnt accidentally have sex with Pacey. You could call it more of an experiment.

And neither of you were science majors. Although with both your obvious affection for the subject...Im beginning to wonder why neither of you took up science in college.

Jen!

You know I think this probably stems back from your marine biology assignment. Whenever you and Pacey get together over science some bizarre sexual thing will happen."

Like a snail menage-a-trois?

Yes. Or the fact that you and Pacey apparently had sex as an experiment. Im still waiting for an explanation Joey.

Okay. You know how youre always telling me about the whole Harry Met Sally deal.

Yeah

Well during our road trip Pacey and I found it to be particularly true. I mean Pacey and I are best friends but spending so much time togetherwell you could say the sexual tension kind of got into the way. And things were getting kind of awkward and embarrassing, especially when we were sharing the same bed. So we decided to have sex. We both came up with this theory that if we slept together than the sexual tension would dissipate and then problem solvedno more awkward situations. It was only a theory but the more things got awkwardwell At first we did the whole kissing and making out thingyou know to see if that would help and it did. But the whole sexual curiosity was still there I suppose and finally we decided that we might as well try having sex.

So you just did it? Just like that?!?

Yeah. And our theory proved to be correct. After that one timeno more awkward situations.

And you just both went back to being Pacey and Joey best friends...with no weirdness.

Of course there was some weirdness, in the beginning. But thats all over with and Pacey and I are just as good if not better friends. So you see that one time doesnt really count. It was just a way of getting rid of the sexual tension.

It didnt work very well.

Thats not true! I mean yes there is always going to be some embers of attraction between Pacey and I but its not like the tension is all consuming.

My opinion the two of you have just learnt to hide it better.

You have no idea what youre talking about Jen.

Yes I do. And you know I do Joey. Youre just not willing to admit it to yourself. You and Pacey are perfect for each other. No matter how much the two of you want to deny it or try and screw it up. I still cant believe the two of you had sex!

Youre just p/issed because you only found out about it.

Well theres that too.

Besides Im sure you and Jack have all sorts of secrets that me and Pacey know nothing about.

But thats different Joey.

Oh really?? And how so?

Because I say it is.

Glad to know. Look Jen I really have to go. I have to finish up my packing. Pacey and I leave for Capeside tonight.

Okay then. Safe driving.

Thanks. Ill see you in Capeside.

You can count on it.
