Pacey twiddled his thumbs idly. Things werent working out the way he had planned. In his mind Pacey had taken Joey out for a romantic dinner where he had confessed his feelings. After dinner they would appear at the New Years party as a happy, newly formed couple. It had kind of been Paceys secret New Years resolution tell Joey how he felt and finally get together with Joey. Of course Pacey had never bothered to factor in the presence of one Mr Robert Franklin. Robert. Robert Franklin, my old friend from college. Remember? Joey had asked. Pacey remembered sourly. Robert Franklin was an intellectual, pretentious, rich snob with golden boy good looks and disgustingly white teeth. Pacey had his suspicions, even way back in college, that cosmetic dental surgery had created those ever white, ever bright teeth that Robert smugly flashed around. It was Mr Robert Franklin that had ruined Paceys plans for tonight. There had been no romantic dinner but instead some awkward threesome, nothing kinky about it but rather where Pacey felt like the unwanted third wheel. If this was some kind of omen than 2008 was going to be a horrendous year. Now Pacey stood amidst the many socialites of New York who were celebrating the coming of 2008 whilst Joey and Robert danced. Watching as Robert twirled Joey across the dance floor, Pacey couldnt believe that Joey seriously liked this guy. Whats more as Pacey examined Robert closer.Roberts nose seemed oddly straight. Pacey remembered Rovers nose being much more crooked. Nose job, Pacey decided. Not to mention the guy plucked his eyebrows. And for all of Roberts evolved, intellectual, smooth talk Pacey recognised an operator when he saw one. This guy was only interested in one thing. Joey might think of him as only a friend and Robert may have claimed to be simply an old college friends but Pacey had no doubts that he had seen more than friendly interest in Roberts eyes. The guy was up to no good. Pacey stood belligerent as he glared at Robert.
Paceys shooting me death glares that would kill. Dont be silly Robert! Paceys not doing anything of the kind. Joey replied as she looked over Roberts shoulder and gave a little wave to Pacey. Thats because youre blind dear. You dont see what everyone else sees. Paceys been shooting me looks that could kill because Im moving in onto his territory. Im monopolising the ever beautiful Joey Potter and the poor guys is so hopelessly jealous and in love with you that hes seriously contemplating murder at the moment. You dont have to sound so smug about it. I enjoy Paceys misery. What is it with the two of you? I could never figure out why the two of you never got along during college. Pacey just rubs me the wrong way. He says the same thing about you. You do realise Robert, that for all your differences you and Pacey are remarkably alike. So youre basically saying were both lazy, smart asses who are smitten by the gorgeous Joey Potter. Stop that! Stop what? Robert asked all innocently. Smitten by the gorgeous Joey Potter? If I didnt know better I would say that youre deliberately trying to aggravate Pacey. You know me too well. Yes I do. Not to mention the fact that I know who youre really smitten with. And who may that be? Pray tell? Does the name Jack McPhee ring any bells? Joey laughed in delight as Robert blushed. I knew it Robbie! I knew it! You and Jack would make a lovely couple!! Oh Im so happy! Dont you dare try and play matchmaker Josephine Potter!! Would I do that? Yes you would. Let me and Jack try and work things out by ourselves. Only if you let me and Pacey work things out ourselves. As if I would meddle in your affairs! Robert scoffed. You would. Not to mention that you have Robbie. As much as I know how much it delights you to provoke Pacey, youre never so deliberately aggravating. Im betting Jack batted a few eyelashes at you and you succumbed like putty in Jacks hands. I hate you Joesphine. Glad to know Im right Robbie.
Death seemed to be too good for Robert Franklin. Pacey decided he wanted torture. Some nice physical torture before he dumped Robert into some dark, lonely cell and threw away the key. That way Pacey would know that Joey was safe from the evil clutches of Robert Franklin. So absorbed was Pacey in his plans that he didnt notice the blonde that tripped and landed in his arms. Oh my gawd! Im sooo sorry. Thank you for catching me. Im such a klutz. I cant believe I fell. Not a problem. It could happen to the best of us. Oh youre being so nice about this. I feel so embarrassed but youre so nice. My names Wendy. Nice to meet you Wendy. Im Pacey. Wow!! Your name sounds so interesting. I love interesting names. Is there any special meaning or reason behind it? Not that I know of. Well I love it anyway. Pacey. I think I could say it forever. Pacey. Pacey. Pacey. Oh my gawd! I sound like such a ditz or an airhead. Its just that Im really nervous about being here. I know no one and I just completely embarrassed myself by tripping over and falling into your arms. So Im standing here babbling to you about goodness knows what sort of idiotic things and Breathe. Its okay to breathe. Oh. Wendy blushed. Im really sorry about this. Ill just go away and stop bothering you. Dont be silly. Youre not bothering. I know exactly what you mean about being nervous here. Everything does look so elegant and beautiful and intimidating, doesnt it? Pacey replied kindly. Oh yes! It does! And Im not very good with meeting new people. Well falling into a complete strangers arms is a good way to start. Wendy blushed again. Im so sorry about that. Hey Im just joking again. Its not like you planned to fall. Cmon. Let me get you a drink.
Joey headed towards Pacey. She hadnt spent much time with him despite their plans to stick together. Certainly Roberts appearance had caused some disruption but Joey was determined to spend some time alone with Pacey. There was something special about tonight and not simply because it was New Years eve. The whole night was beautiful. The food was delicious, the drinks abundant and champagne flowing. A clear, bright night sky with stars sparkling down from the heavens. Joey had been reunited with old college friends such as Robert Franklin among others. She had mingled with the many prominent and important people in attendance as well as spending some quality time with Jen and Jack. Wearing an elegant black dress Joey looked stunning. There was a classic feel to the dress with a twist of new, modern innovation. Something old mingled with something new. Indeed there was something special about the night. It was a night of friendship. It was a night of friendship and perhaps something more. Joey tingled with excitement and anticipating as she neared Pacey only to stop and frown. Who was the blonde woman who had literally fallen into Paceys arms? Joey watched as the blonde giggled and laughed, her frown increasing as Pacey and the blonde headed off somewhere together. She didnt like the look of the blonde. Skanky and a ditz, Joey decided. Not to mention the whole accidentally tripping ploy was so old and obvious. Joey couldnt believe Pacey had fallen for it. After a moment of contemplation Joey decided that it was in Paceys best interests if she interfered. Not to mention youre incredibly jealous. A little voice said in Joeys mind. Oddly enough the voice in Joeys head sounded a lot like Jen.
Oh Pacey youre so smart and funny! the blonde gushed. Joey grimaced at the sound of the blondes voice. It was high pitched and annoyingly grating and the sound of the blondes voice was probably causing all sorts of damage to Paceys ears. She watched as the doe eyed blonde batted her eyelashes and shook her head so the thick blonde curls fell sweetly to one side. Joey felt nauseous. With determination she marched to where the blonde and Pacey stood. Pacey there you are! Ive been looking all over for you. Youve been looking all over for me? I didnt realise you would have noticed my presence what with Robert occupying your time. Dont be silly. As if I wouldnt notice you. Its not like your invisible. Thats true! piped up the blonde. Paceys very visible to me. Arent you honey? Joeys eyes narrowed at the sound of the endearment and the way in which the blonde ever so comfortably draped her arms around Pacey. Whos your friend Pace? Oh this is Wendy. Wendy, my room mate Joey. Wendy tripped and fell into my arms. And like a white knight in shining armour Pacey was gallant enough to save me. His grasp was so strong which was ever so lucky for me. He saved me without Pacey I would have been such an embarrassment. You still are. Joey muttered. Whats that Jo? Pacey queried. Um nothing at allI was just wondering what the topic of conversation the two of you were so immersed in before I arrived. Oh absolutely everything. Pacey has such a large expanse of general knowledge. So impressive! It makes my head spin. Actually thats just the air. Joey informed Wendy. The air? Wendy asked confused. What Joey meant is that the air is kind of stifling and stuffy in here. Pacey amended whilst shooting a warning glance at the innocent looking Joey. Oh youre quite right. Wendy agreed. Once again Joey muttered under her breath. The air must be quite stifling trapped in your head. Pacey shot Joey another glance, unsure of what she had said but instinctively knowing that it was a derogatory remark. Why dont we moved outside and get some fresh air? Pacey suggested. Thats a great idea Pacey! Wendy agreed. Joey rolled her eyes and smiled when the waiter came by with more glasses of champagne. Even as Wendy and Pacey made a move to go outside Joey accidentally stumbled tripping the waiters tray to the side and spilling the champagne all over Wendy. Oops! Im so sorry Wendy! Im such a klutz. Wendy smiled. Her smile much to bright as tears threatened to fall. Thats okay! Im just the same. If you would...uhexcuse me.Im just going to go to the ladies. Wendy fled and Joey could not help the small smile that spread across her face. Pacey took look at Wendy and another at Joey before he grabbed Joey by the arm and dragged her to a quiet corner. What the h/ell is wrong with you today Jo? Nothing. Nothing?!? You deliberately spilt champagne over that poor girl! You cant prove that. Thats bullsh/it and you know it, Jo. Maybe. Youve deliberately went out of your way to be as bitchy and nasty to Wendy as possible. And the whole night youve been ignoring me because youre too absorbed with Robert!! Firstly the girl is a bimbo, airhead. So excuse me if I find it hard to respect her. Secondly is this what your whole attitude has been about? Robert?? Youve been sulking all night, refusing to talk or join in the festivities because youre upset that Ive been paying attention to Robert. Well Robert happens to be an old college friend and Im sorry you cant accept that and feel you have to act all immature and childish. Get over yourself Jo. This has nothing to do with Robert. I mean sure I dont like the guy but I dont care if you freaking marry the guy! What I do care is the way youve been treating me. Youre so absorbed in your precious Robert Franklin that you couldnt care less what happened to me. Only now that Robert has left you alone you have to come back to good ol Pacey the doormat. Only your doormat found someone else to play withWendyand so you were upset. Well go back to Robert. I dont care. I have Wendy. This is so typical of you! Typical of me? Going for the easy lay. I mean sex is all that matters isnt it Pacey? And we all know how quickly Wendy will jump into your bed. Not that you would know anything about sex. Youre so godd/amn frigid youd freeze a guys balls off. Joey bit her lip and tried to ignore the pang of hurt. I expected more from you Pace but I guess I was wrong. Just like I was wrong that there might have been more between us. I was stupid enough to think that the kisses we shared recently meant something. Obviously they only meant something to me. More fool me. Jo Pacey was stunned. Go back to Wendy, Pacey. I think I see Robert in the corner. Deliberately, without looking back, Joey turned and headed straight for Robert. Pacey stood, reflective, before going in search of Wendy.
Joey? Whats wrong? Nothing Robert. Just leave me alone. Now come on Joey. You know I cant do that. Tell me whats wrong. Ill tell you whats wrong. I should have known better than to have listened to you. Joey declared her eyes fierce as she pointed at Robert. And you. And you! She reiterated to the upcoming figures of Jen and Jack. What did we do wrong? Jen protested. Ill tell you what you did wrong. You, Jen, consistently bugged me about how Pacey and I were perfect for each. Your eloquent words managed to convince me that you were speaking the truth and so all my buried feelings for Pacey came up to the surface. And you, Jack, you decided to help play matchmaker. You schemed with Jen. H/ell I know youre the one who convinced Robert to go all macho and boyfriend-like around Pacey. And Robbie, because youre so hopelessly in love with Jack you automatically agreed to join in with their little scheme, deliberately aggravating Pacey. Without the three of you meddling, Pacey and I would have happily remained friends and all my feelings for Pacey would have remained buried. Only now theyre out in the open and its going to ruin our friendship. Joey. Thats not true. Its better that your feelings are out in the open instead of being buried. Jen consoled. Well youre wrong Jen. I could live with just a friendship with Pacey so long as he never knew how I felt. H/ell Id even got to the point where I had convinced myself that friendship was the best thing for the two of us. Only you guys just hat to stir things up, you just had to get me thinking about wanting more. Well thats not going to happen. Pacey made it very clear tonight that there is never going to be anything more between us. And now I have to live with his rejection and the possibility that we dont even have a friendship. So thanks for ruining my life for me. And I hope you all have a great year! Joey stated as she turned to brush pass her friends. Joey! Jack called. Paceys in love with you. I know it! He even told me myself. Well either you were hearing things or hes had a change of heart. Either way it doesnt matter anymore. Joey replied. Joey, you know that Pacey loves you. Whatever just happened between the two of you, you know that Pacey loves you. Dont be an idiot about this. Talk to Pacey. Robert advised. And I should listen to you? Youre the one who has been harbouring a thing for Jack ever since you met him. And I dont see any progress in your love life so I hardly doubt that youre the person I should be listening to. Jen. If you want somebodys affairs to meddle in why not try Jacks and Roberts. Just leave my life alone! With those final words Joey stalked off disappearing into the crowd. Jack turned to Robert. You like me? Robert blushed. Welluhyea. Awwwarent the two of you cute. Now why dont you kiss. Robert and Jack leaned in close before Jen interrupted them with a glint in her eye. Actually I have a better idea.
Pacey found Wendy near the ladies room sitting on a lounge in tears. Hey are you okay? Pacey asked. Im just fine. Wendy hiccupped. No youre not. Here take my handkerchief. Youve really been so nice to me and I feel just awful. Whys that? I mean you and Joey Hey, I wanted to apologise about Joey. I dont know what got into her. What she did was inexcusable and Dont apologise. I know what was wrong with her. She was jealous and I dont blame her. I mean if another woman made a moved on my guy I would react the same wayif I had the guts. Oh no. Youve got it wrong. Joey and I arent together. Were just friends. But you want something more. Yeah. Only I think I just ruined my chance for something more. And its all my fault. No Wendy, it wasnt your fault. Yes it was. You see I was just using you to try and make my boyfriend jealous. Greg and I came together but as soon as we arrived this gorgeous red head has been monopolising his time. So I came up with this idea of flirting with another guy to try and get Greg to notice me again and to hopefully make him jealous. Not that Greg even noticed. So if I hadnt picked youyou and Joey would be together right now. Its just you were handsome, you looked like you werent with anyone and you looked nice. If I had known about Joey I wouldnt have used you like that. Like I said before Wendy, its not your fault. And Greg must be deaf, dumb and blind to leave a gorgeous woman like you by herself. Thanks. I only wished I was more like Joey. Tall. Smart. Elegant. Beautiful. Sophisticated. Inwardly Pacey laughed thinking about how often Joey complained about being too tall, too awkward and too unattractive. He wondered if all women were unnecessarily insecure about their looks. Wendy. You dont need to be Joey. You just need to be yourself. Besides youre already smart, elegant and everything else that Joey is except tall. So go out there and fight for your man. Pacey groaned he was starting to sound like one of those self-help, girl power movement groups. Now go before I starting calling you girlfriend and burning bras. Okay! Okay! Wendy laughed. But only if you promise to go talk to Joey and tell her how you feel. Its too late for that. Pacey bemoaned. Shes already in the arms of Robert Franklin. Hey, isnt that Robert Franklin over there? Kissing someone else? Wendy asked. Pacey turned to look. Was that a flash of blonde hair? Although he could not make out the figure of whom Robert was currently lip-locked to, Pacey knew that it was not Joey. Rage filled Pacey as he excused himself to go have a talk with Robert.
What the h/ell do you think youre doing? Pacey demanded as he pulled Robert and the other figure apart. Kissing. What do you think it looks like Pacey? And cant you mind your own business?? Well this currently happens to be my business. Joey is my best friend and I will not have you cheating on her like the lying scum that you are. I dont see what youre getting all worked up about. Why you! Pacey resisted the urge to smash Roberts pretty boy face onto the floor. I cant believe you have the audacity to say that! Joey happens to be a beautiful, wonderful, talented woman. Much too good for the likes of you. And you have the nerve to ask whats wrong with kissing another.Jack?!?!? Pacey stopped and stared in confusion as Jack was suddenly revealed to him as the mystery figure that Robert had been kissing. Jen stepped from behind Jack revealing the glimpse of blonde hair Pacey had seen earlier. Roberts gay, Pacey. And Robert and Jack are currently an item. Oh. Pacey was silent trying to absorb the information. Why didnt you tell me this before Jack? Because Robert and I just got together Pacey. Otherwise I would have told you sooner. Oh. Pacey was still dumbfounded. Pacey I agree that Joey is a beautiful, wonderful, talented woman. And if I wasnt gay you would have a fight on your hands but as it is I am gay...and happily together with Jack. Besides Joey is head over heels in love with her. So the two of you should really talk. Robert advised. Actually. Jen stated, a steely noted in her voice. If the two of you arent together by the stroke of midnight youre both going to have on very pissed off fairy godmother on your hands. Gotcha. Pacey nodded as he sprinted off to find Joey. Hey Pace! Jen, Jack and Robert called. Shes on the balcony. Pacey nodded, turned and headed to his left.
Stars twinkled brightly in the black sky and Joey could hear the cheers of revelry loud and clear reverberating in the air. It was 11:00pm. A new year was almost upon them. She supposed there were new year resolutions to be made but honestly Joey wasnt in the mood. What was she meant to resolve? I resolve to get over Pacey J Witter? Ill eat better and do more exercise? I wont be so bitchy? Ill forget about Pacey? They were all stupid, unrealistic promises that would never be fulfilled. The cool wind sent shivers across Joeys body and she felt cold and alone. A new year was coming and she found she could not muster up the slightest bit of excitement. All she wanted to do was go home, crawl into her bed and sleep. Maybe when she woke up the memories of this disastrous night would go away and the new year would have arrived. She didnt want to think about old friends and new friends, she didnt want to think about all the potential the year 2008 possessed. All Joey wanted to do was wallow in her loneliness. Leaving the balcony Joey pushed her way through the crowd of people in search of the coat room. She waited impatiently for her coat and handbag even as waiters besieged her with glasses of champagne and unknown persons stopped to greet her. Leaving the party Joey searched vainly for a taxi but when there were none forthcoming she recklessly decided to walk home. The distance wasnt that long anyway, maybe a 45 minute walk or so. Shed get home before midnight to curl up in her bed and forget the new year.
Pacey frantically searched for Joey. Pushing through the crowd that seemed to prevent further movement at every step. He spotted a glimpse of Joey leaving the balcony and heading towards the coat. He tried to follow but was surrounded by people. Everywhere he turned there were people. People who wanted to stop and chat. People who prevented him from getting to Joey. People who wouldnt let him go. Pacey pushed and shoved no longer caring if he was being rude. He saw Joey exit the building and tried desperately to make his way towards her. When he finally managed to get out the building he saw Joey in a far distance and raced after her. While the streets were not as busy as normal there were still people to dodge. There were still one too many persons who blocked Paceys way and hindered his progress. Joey was getting further and further away. And it wasnt like Pacey believed in the magic of fairy godmothers and whats not but something deep within Pacey felt if he didnt find Joey by midnight then the magic would disappear. Something within Pacey felt that the magical carriage that led to Joeys heart would turn into a plain, ordinary pumpkin if he didnt kiss her by midnight. So Pacey raced on, conscious of the time. Time ticked by as if it knew Pacey was competing against it. 11:00pm quickly became 11:05pm and then 11:10pm and then 11:15pm. Joey was still in sight, not quite as far away as she had been before but still too far away. He shouted her name but Paceys voice was lost amidst the cheers and screaming of the people on the street. Pacey swore. No matter how far he ran Joey seemed to be much too far away. He had no idea how she managed to walk so fast, especially in those d/amn high heels of hers. Increasing his speed Pacey raced on. Joey was suddenly very close. Under normal circumstance close enough to shout at but the street noise was too loud. It was 11:30pm. Pacey took several bounding steps determined to reach her. Almost inevitably a crack in the pavement lay making one part of the street shaky and loose. It was no surprise that Paceys foot would step on that very piece of cement. No shock that Pacey stumbled and fell, his ankle turning and twisting in an awkward position. Pacey watched in dismay as Joey grew further away. He tried to lift himself up in frustration but collapsed onto the ground. He tried once more but it was useless. Pacey felt like sobbing, like tearing his hair out in frustration. It was almost 11:36pm. By sheer will alone Pacey lifted himself up and gingerly hobbled. Still trying to follow Joeys tracks and yet knowing that it was probably too late already.
Joey was at the door of the apartment when the nagging feeling that something was wrong intensified. It had been small and persistent, bugging her but she had determinedly ignored it up until now. Something within Joey could ignore it no longer. It was a familiar feeling. A feeling Joey had received throughout her friendship with Pacey whenever something was seriously wrong. It was a mutual thing. It was a bond of friendship. A bond that reminded Joey that even in her darkest moments of loneliness she was never truly alone. Right now, however, that bond was pulling her to Pacey. Telling her that there was something wrong and she needed to get to Pacey ASAP. It had never been wrong before and Joey was not about dismiss this feeling despite how angry or hurt she was feeling with Pacey. Even when Joey and Pacey were so furious at one another that they would go for weeks without speaking, whenever the bond called they would be there for the another. Now Joey turned, her heart thumping and beating wildly as she quickly moved to get to Pacey. She had no idea what as wrong. All Joey knew was that Pacey needed her. And truthfully, she needed him too. The elevator was taking too long to appear so Joey quickly ran down the stairs, across the streets. She was aware of time, knew that somehow she had to reach Pacey before it was too late. Too late for what, Joey had no idea but she ran with that belief revolving around in her head. It was 11:50pm and it seemed as people were now lining the streets, their eyes ready for the fireworks as they awaited the coming of the new year. Joey bumped into numerous people but continued to run leaving a breathless sorry at her wake. The distance seemed further, going back, than it had before and time was moving at a disgustingly fast pace. 11:51pm. Sorry! 11:52pm. Joey stumbled. 11:53pm. Excuse me! Excuse me! 11:54pm. Joey dodged and weaved through the various people on the street. 11:55pm. Pacey. Joey stopped. She stood there staring for a moment at the man before her. He was leaning heavily onto his left side using the sides of buildings as some form of support as he slowly hobbled towards her. His body was tense and intent on moving forward and he hadnt seemed to notice Joeys presence as yet. Pacey. She spoke again. This time he heard and he looked up. their eyes locking. 11:56pm. Joey moved slowly, carefully, step by step closer to Paceys arms. Are you okay? What happened? Your ankle? Im okay Jo. I think I just twisted my ankle. Joey bent down to look. Its all swollen and it looks slightly purplish. Which probably explain why it hurts so much. 11:57pm. Jo. Im sorry. Pacey guided Joeys body up away from his ankle so that they were standing face to face, eyes locked once again. Im sorry too. 11:58pm. Wendy doesnt mean anything to me. I wouldnt just find a random girl to sleep with. I know I have in the past but Youre not really like that. Things are different now Jo. Sides Im not sure if I could even if I wanted. What? She was already taken? Joey teased. Something like that. Joey and what I said about youI didnt mean it. You are by far the most passionate, sexy woman I have ever met. Its already forgotten Pace. And if you do believe what you just said about me is truewell you need to get out more. Joey stated, a twinkle in her eye. 11:59pm. Almost new year Jo. Almost new year. New beginnings as well. I like the sound of that. I love you Jo. I like the sound of that. 12:00am. Fireworks exploded. Cheers erupted. Champagne was popped and drank. Everyone toasted the coming of 2008. Paceys lips met Joeys. A new years kiss. A kiss to mark the beginning. Lets get you home Mr Witter. Joey stated as they broke apart from their kiss. Lead the way Ms Potter. Leaning heavily on Joey, Pacey and Joey carefully hobbled through the new year revellers and weaved their way back to their apartment. Amidst the bright sparkle of fireworks in the midnight sky they were two figures joined together by the bonds of friendship and now something much more. Without saying a word but only through a simple kiss they had welcomed the beginning of a new year and the beginning of a romance. |
