Florida - (ANN) The 2006 hurricane season may not be as violent as last years, but the number of storms will be high.  Researchers at Colorado State University predict at least 17 storms, 9 developing into hurricanes, 5 expected to have a rating of a cat 3 or higher.

Last year's season had 27 storms, 15 of which became hurricanes. Overall, the storms cost $80 billion in damages.  Long term averages have 10 storms each season with six becoming major storms.
