Wendy's Catfish Restaurant - Lake Texoma
This is a ride that can be lengthened or shortened depending upon how much time you have. Country roads are used for about half of the trip and interstate for the other half... but you can vary that proportion either direction to make the trip longer or shorter. Highway 5 is less like a highway than a FM road.... so I consider it that way.
Directions:
1. Take Highway 5 (Ave K) north from Plano. You will pass through Allen, Mckinney, Melissa (little jog here to stay on Highway 5), and Anna. If you have time, stop for a bit in Anna and tour the old hardware store. Go east on FM 2862, and you'll see it just after you cross the railroad tracks. This old store was built around the turn of the century, and was still in business until a few years ago. Now it is maintained as a landmark and museum. You can still see the faded advertising mural painted on the side of the brick building. I love it when old buildings like this are saved... too much of our architectural and cultural heritage is lost every year.
2. Continue north on Highway 5. You will pass through Van Alstyne and finally reach Howe. At Howe, you will hop on Highway 75 to zoom your way northward through Sherman and Dennison. There are antique stores in Sherman... if you have time.
3. After you pass through Dennison, you will need to watch for signs directing you to Eisenhower State Park. Exit from 75, and follow the signs for the State Park. You won't actually enter the state park. It is located right next to the dam for Lake Texoma. Trust me, it will make sense when you are there :) Stay on the road that crosses the dam and enjoy the view!! Lake Texoma is HUGE... and there are almost always some very large sailboats cruising around the deep end near the dam.
4. When you reach the other side of the dam, you will be in Oklahoma. The road you are on will dead end into another road. Where the roads meet you will see Wendy's. The catfish and seafood is reasonably priced and pretty good, to boot.
