Biography
Although they
appeared in few movies during the 40's, the Andrews Sisters are best remembered for their
sweet optimistic musical style. They reached the height of their popularity during World
War II, where they entertained troops and gave voice to the patriotic feelings our nation
had as it pulled together to fight the forces of evil overseas. The Andrews Sisters sold
over 90 million records during their careers!
Patty Andrews sang lead as soprano, Maxene carried as second soprano, and La Verne Andrews sang as bass for the trio.
In 1937, they were discovered by Dave Kapp, who heard them over a taxi cab radio during a live band remote. The sisters' big break came in 1938 with Bei Mir Bist du Schoen, a Yiddish tune, which became the first million selling record for an all-female group. The trio went on to record 1800 songs, including Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, Rum and Coca Cola and Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree. The Girls performed and recorded with the likes of Bing Crosby, Guy Lombardo, and Glenn Miller.
The successful sisters broke up briefly in the early 50's, but had reformed by 1956 for good. America's Wartime Sweethearts continued to sing together as a trio until La Verne was forced to retire due to illness.
