My Own Valentine
by Devin Ens
A drawer full of two-for-one movie passes
A poster advertising a jewelry sale
Kids passing love-notes in their classes
I sent all my hugs out in the mail
Everyone appreciates their partner
I know I’ll never lose mine
‘Cos every year I’ve always been my
own
Valentine
Fill the bath tub with hot water
Plug the ghetto in by the sink
Listen to some Roy Orbison
And pour myself another drink
Sit and watch my skin turn wrinkly
Till the water’s cold and I’m out of wine
Another year I get to be my own
Valentine
Maybe for some it’s a happy day
For me, it’s just the shits
How can I celebrate romance
When I’ve never experienced it?
Make curried beans for dinner
‘Cos there’s no one around to smell
the farts
Convince myself I’m suffering on purpose
All in the name of art
Playing with myself at seven-thirty
Sound asleep by nine
Another romantic evening as my own
Valentine.
