| Studs and Duds: Week 4 | ||||||||
| Four weeks are in the books, and some teams have jumped off to great starts while others have been struggling to pick up wins, or even points. SO far this year there have been three especially surprising teams and two very disapointing teams. They meed these criteria for different reasons, butare all teams enjoying wonderful or weak starts to the year. Surprise Teams: Detroit Wolverines: Last Season's Record: 6-7, Last in AFCE East So Far: 4-0, First in AFC East Thus far, the WOlverines have been one of the best teams in the league. This success can be credited to their patience and high actvity. The wolverines made their big trade this off-season by bringing in Peyton Manning. hey also waited for Frank Gore to break out and become a top running back instead of leaving him out on the waiver wire. By watching the transactions of other teams in the off-season, the Wolverines collected their most valuable reciever from the first four games in Keyshawn Johnson. Add this up with the Balitimore Ravens defens, and there is an instant contender looking to knock the Argonauts, Peyton's former team, out of the top east in the AFC East. Prediction: 10-3, Win AFC East Pirates: Last Season's Record: 3-11, Last in AFC West The Pirates are taking over a team that was roughed up last year. An active off-season has created a new roster that has all the tools to reach the playoffs. This year they have been lead by Donovan McNabb, Marques Colston and most importantly, Donovan McNabb. With a healthy McNabb, any team is instantly in contention. The smaller players behind these two have combined to make this team the top team in the AFC. Prediction: 9-4, Win AFC West Damn Penguins: Last Season's Record: 2-11, Last in AFC East So Far: 1-3, Last in AFC East The Penguins have no owner, and seemed to have no chance to win a game, but this past week they pulled it off. This is a team that could have been 0-13, but instead it broke off nearly 100 points in a convincing win over Finsmagic. Mark Brunell and the Falcons defense came up big for the win, but do not expect them to jump out at you when they are on your schedule. This once a year outburst stunned Finsmagic, but it seems like they may be the only one. Prediction: 2-11, Last in NFC East Disapointments: El Paso Bandits Last Season's Record: 8-4, AFC Wildcard So Far: 0-4, Last in AFC East Playing in a much improved division has not helped the Bandits return to their playoff form from a year ago. Instead, impact players have struggled and the team has been dragged into the cellar and is now the only team in the league without a win. No team has lost more than five straight to start the season, but the Bandits may join those teams with a tough match-up in week five. So far this year, Carnell Williams and Randy Moss have been the major disappointments, but even if they turn it all around, this team does not look to be more than a spoiler. Prediction: 4-9, Last in AFC East Motown Catmilkers Last Season's Record: 6-7, Third in AFC West So Far: 1-3, Third in AFC West The Catmilkers have been the hard luck team this year. Despite scoring more points than many real contenders, the schedule has not been nice to them and they have fallen into third to start the year. They have not gotten the expected success of Matt Hasselbeck or Jamal Lewis so far this year. These two players could have been the difference between first and third so far this year, but it may not be too late to turn it around. However, playing in a strong division is never easy. Prediction: 7-6, Third in AFC East, Miss Playoffs |
