Hard
luck story. A
Canberra weekend in July, raining cold, windy. A Kawasaki KLR650 in my
garage, ready, willing, fuelled up. The weather in southern Victoria,
sunny, reasonably warm! Soon
I was riding through the rain towards Cooma NSW. It dawned on me that
I’d forgotten a few things as usual – the biggest and most important
– my tent. No worries, I could buy a $20 special somewhere. I popped
into a sports/toy shop in Comma and found in the clutter a $16.95
“A” frame tent. It was the only one left and looked like an ex-demo.
Being the scrooge I am I purchased it for $15.00 and continued. Four
hours later I rode into Lakes Entrance in Victoria in the driving rain.
I found a caravan park and to the disbelief of the person at reception
– hired an unpowered tent site for $6.00. The ground was saturated,
caravaners and even a couple of BMW riders said it was way too wet to
camp. ‘Not real campers or motorcyclists’ I thought. It was near
dark when I unstrapped the sodden cardboard box containing my new tent
from my bike. Everyone gawked through the rain, and a nice old couple
even offered me their caravan annex to sleep in. Proud, stubborn and
die-hard I said I’d bought a new tent and wasn’t scared of rain and
cold. The
material came out of the box – it was red and yellow with pictures of
Porky Pig on it. How embarrassing! It was a strange shape too – and no
pegs or poles. Upon rolling it out in the mud I soon found out it was
actually a kid’s wading pool! I’m over six feet tall and the pool
was about four foot long. I bunched up on the ground and pulled it over
me to keep the rain off.
Best Rat Bike

Rear tail light rescued from side of road where I presume it fell off a truck. Chain is very long due to front placement of engine, front forks will be replaced with genuine Harley style springer forks. Seat covering is a genuine hessian “gunny sack”. Fuel tank Acerbis camel back. Mirrors from long ago fit into handle ends. This machine will be seen at rallies in the near future. Thank you to everyone who sent in photos and stories.
