Grady first got involved in training dog's at a very young age following behind his dad as he trained hunting dogs.  When he was 13 he got a job and earned enough money at $1.00 an hour to purchase his first dog (mail order German Shepherd). He had learned from being around the trainers and hunters with his dad that no "one man" knew all the techniques it takes to train all dogs, so he bought several books from different authors on obedience training.  This started a life long ambition to learn more and more techniques to train.  Needless to say he bought books and videos on all kinds of dog training, the locating of old graves, and various information on decomposition.
After the Murrah Building bombing in OKC, he decided to train solely for Search and Rescue work.  His first dog for this was a Labrador.  He trained it (Sandy) for cadaver, scent specific air scent and scent specific tracking.  Sandy was used on numerous call-outs by law enforcement and the Corp of Engineers and was credited with finding a drowning victim in 72 feet of water.  Grady worked Sandy until he learned of a disabled girl in Kansas desperately needing a dog with all of Sandy's qualifications (she was trained with many "extra specialties"), so Grady donated Sandy to this girl and she has been working as a Service Dog for the past many years.
After Sandy he trained several different breeds, experimenting with different techniques.  He decided in 1999 that each field should be specialized and decided it was best for him to specialize in cadaver.
Grady is the originator of the "Salt Shaker Method"...he has instructed for the Osage Beach Fire Protection District Search and Rescue Division, and for T.A.S.K. (The Alliance of Search K9's) in Texas...he has taught classes in "Theory and Technique" for the Missouri Department of Corrections...has been a guest speaker for the Oklahoma Emergency Management Association...has done many demonstrations for the Northern Oklahoma College Criminal Justice Department...has written many articles, "How to Train the Cadaver Dog" for the "Training the Hunting Dog" (THD) magazine, and is still instructing for various Search and Rescue Organizations across the United States, as well as individual classes around home.
Grady has volunteered many hours of search service to various law enforcement agencies.  He has dedicated 34 years to training dogs in the areas of obedience, bite and protection, narcotics, cadaver, tracking/trailing and hunting...and has trained dogs that are serving various law enforcement entities across the country. He has to date: 203 certified hours of training and 450 certified hours of instructing...the hours of "unofficial" training and teaching are countless, and he has now produced a training video "Scent Dog Training with Grady Jarvis" with plans of more in the future.
Over the years Grady has developed a system of training that he believes is not only the fastest way to get pups started, but also develops the most dependable dogs when finished.
