Dear Minister

RE: GREYHOUNDS IN SPAIN

I write as a supporter of the UK Charity, 'Greyhounds In Need', whose founder, Anne Finch, during 1991, started to investigate, defend and rescue the unfortunate greyhounds of Spain. We read in her latest bulletin, numerous letters from animal welfare volunteers in Caceres, Granada, Badajoz, Madrid, Cordoba, Segovia, etc; who co-operate with GIN, of the problems facing them in their daily work to relieve the suffering of these animals in your country.

We read of their struggles in the face of prejudice, apathy, insufficient law enforcement, widespread abandonment of animals and inadequate buildings for their shelters. We sympathise with their struggle against traditions which promote the gratuitous mistreatment of animals. Here in the UK, it causes great sorrow, rage and helplessness when we hear of the appalling hangings and brutal killings of the galgos, when the hunting season ends in Spain.

We support 'Greyhounds in Need' request for an Animal Protection Law to be applied nationally to establish breeding controls, compulsory identification of pets, sporting and hunting dogs and improved resources to promote responsible dog ownership, handling, training and veterinary care. Such a law is urgently needed, due to the complete absence of any regulations in certain Autonomies.

Spain has a frontline position in the European Union, but this cannot ever be complete until Spain recognises the necessity for a compassionate attitude towards animals.

We feel the greatest of concern, relating to the shocking cruelty of greyhounds in Spain and ask that they be given their right to live without pain and unnecessary suffering.

We look forward to learning of what regulations will be put into place to safeguard animals and especially galgos in Spain.

Please would you kindly send your reply to Mrs Anne Finch, Greyhounds In Need, 5, Greenways, Egham, Surrey, TW20 9PA, United Kingdom, who will inform me.

Yours faithfully,
