Dear Sir/Madam,

Re: Land at:  307 Huntingdon Road, Girton, Cambridge

       D.E.T.R. Appeal Reference No: APP / W0530 / A / 02 / 109018

       Primate Research Development Centre

I wish to object to the above appeal, relating to the proposed Primate Research Centre for the following reasons:-

·        The proposed project is not in the 'national interest', as claimed by the appellants. Research on primates has not, and never will advance medicine for humans.

·        No amount of ‘enhanced’ landscaping will conceal razor wire, watch towers, security lights, surveillance cameras, and guards with dogs etc, which will all be required due to animal rights protesters.

·        Disruption within the local area relating to demonstrations will include extra traffic, parking problems, noise, and all night vigils etc. Campaigns will attract both national and international demonstrations.

·        The proposal is located close to the A14, M11, A428 and A1307, where demonstrations will result in road blockages.

This application has been revoked on two occasions, the most recent being 06th February 2002, which clearly indicates that this proposed development is most certainly not a desirable proposition for Cambridge.

It can be vigorously argued that this proposed Primate Research Centre is very much against our national interest.  Animal experiments do not constitute sagacious research, as it is crude, unreliable, misleading, and cannot be extrapolated to humans because of species difference.

Why do we need brain research on primates when clinical research into the malfunction of the brain can be observed through human patients?  The cutting edge of scientific excellence should be applied to non-animal techniques, which benefit humanity, rather than delay it.

I therefore sincerely trust that this appeal, reference APP / W0530 / A / 02 / 109018 will be rejected, and request that I am notified of the out come.

Yours faithfully
