WESTHOUGHTON GREYHOUND TRACK TO CLOSE AT THE END OF JANUARY 2003

This track closes at the end of January, the owner is away on holiday at the moment, but intends selling the land for housing development.   Julie from Sheya Greyhound & Lurcher Rescue (Manchester),  has been in contact with the local vet (in Warrington), asking them not to destroy the greyhounds when owners/trainers take them in, but to contact her first (some dogs have already been killed).

She is really worried about a "bottle neck" occurring, if these dogs aren't able to get moved on into foster homes etc, with this track closing so soon.   Julie doesn't have kennelling facilities herself, but has to use local boarding kennels.

Anyone who can help to foster, kennel, or transport dogs please ring Julie Morgan of Sheya on 0161 6103525.

The number of dogs needing to be rescued is immense. Some have already been killed.   These dogs are in desperate need of help, and so too is Julie with such limited resources, and in such a short space of time.

PLEASE  CONTACT HER NOW IF YOU ARE ABLE TO HELP IN ANYWAY WHATSOEVER.

* Anglia TV's political programme 'The Big Story' is this week running a telephone/e-mail poll on animal experimentation . . .

Please take a moment to vote yes to the question that animal research should be ended (see below).
The programme is going out at 11.30pm on Wednesday, 29th January 2003 on ITV1.

People will be opposing animal experimentation from the audience, and we therefore also need a good result from the phone poll.   Please vote even if you're from outside the Anglia region - Your call could make all the difference.

The programme's Website www.angliatv.com/bigstory offers viewers the opportunity to send in emails on the topics being discussed each week. These may be read out on the programme.

Should we stop research on animals? To vote YES, we should stop research on animals, call 09011 900 935 (Calls cost no more than 10p)

* End to Trafalgar Square Pigeon Battle? . . .

London Mayor, Ken Livingstone has announced a peace deal to end his own 'Battle of Trafalgar'. He hopes that a pact with the campaign group - 'Save the Trafalgar Square Pigeons' to introduce a phased feeding programme will reduce the number of birds. A six month plan will have the feeding time moved back from lunch time to 8am and the amount of food slowly reduced. (Taken from ARCNews -Jan/Feb 2003, page 6).
