Keith has run this 10-acre wildlife sanctuary for nine and a half years, which he started with his late wife. The land is owned by him, paid by him, and his late wife is buried there. It has taken Broadland District Council ALL THIS TIME to decide that Keith's wildlife reserve should go. Keith is saving lives on a daily basis, with over 350 sick and injured animals, including deer and birds there. Not only is he undertaking incredible dedicated care for these animals, he is also doing the Council a service too!!!  Keith has overwhelming support from vets, businesses, the RSPB, local people, and members of the public have given their support and continue to do so. Keith has said that he will never leave this sanctuary, all he wants is to be left alone and to carry out nursing and saving wildlife.

Please write letters of support to Keith, which he will keep and hand over to the Press, when he needs to.

Broadland District Council have served a planning enforcement notice, which can take effect after 6 weeks, and allows 1 year for the site to be cleared. Keith is going to lodge an appeal with an independent inspector, which means that the enforcement notice will be held in abeyance pending the outcome of that appeal.

Please write to Broadland District Council telling them that they should be supporting Hallswood Wildlife Reserve, it is an asset to both the community and indeed essential for the rescue of wildlife. Because of this eviction, they will be responsible for the suffering and death of tomorrow’s wildlife, if this reserve is not there. Councillors narrowly voted in favour of eviction!!!

This newspaper has been particularly supportive and it's essential that lots of letters are published demanding that Hallswood Wildlife Reserve is NOT closed.

The letters written to Broadland District Council can be the same letters which are forwarded on to Keith, for him to keep, until such time he needs them.

I know we all lead busy lives - but please write just a few lines –

BROADLAND COUNCIL MUST NOT BE ALLOWED TO CLOSE THIS SANCTUARY.

Thank you.

Save - Hallswood Wildlife Reserve

April 2006 update . . .

Hallswood Wildlife Reserve has now lodged an appeal against their eviction notice.

Please write to the below Planning Inspectorate who is dealing with the appeal asking them to overturn the eviction notice. Hallswood has the overwhelming support from vets, businesses, the RSPB, local people, members of the public, and as far away as Dhabi!

Keith (Hall) continues to prove to Broadland Council that this 10 acre sanctuary needs and must stay open - So please let the appeal's Planning Inspectorate know that this rescue centre must not be closed.

All letters must be sent in triplicate (of  3 copies) - otherwise the correspondence will not be used.
All letters must be received by the Planning Inspectorate by
27th April 2006.
All letters must have the correct Appeal References:-

Please keep letters polite:-  Send them to:

Please also send a copy of your letter to Keith Hall at Hallswood.

During an 'unannounced' visit from three Broadland District Council officers to Hallwood Wildlife Reserve, Keith suffered an angina attack, where he collapsed and was rushed to hospital, after the officials threatened him with a fine for allowing rescued goats to nibble trees on the site (land which Keith owns), and for laying a hard-standing on the drive !!!!

Apparently the Council started telling Keith that they were going to fine him for each and every tree which they believe the goats have damaged, even if these trees are harvestable Scot’s pine, which could have been felled ten years ago, and none of the trees in the compound are anything other than pine trees.

Due to extreme stress Keith became gravely ill, collapsed, was unable to speak, and an ambulance was called. Whilst sanctuary staff cared for Keith, the Council officials watched on, then when they became uncomfortable standing over Keith, they then went off to continue their site visit having a cosy upbeat chat, whilst taking photos of the site, and at one point asking each other if they had finished their visit or needed more time.

On top of all this the sanctuary Manager had to ask the officials to leave, as they hadn't noticed that Keith was on board the ambulance, and ready to leave for hospital !!! Keith's blood pressure on arrival at the hospital was 230 over 130, which the hospital doctor said was directly linked to extreme stress.

Keith should have stayed in hospital, but he discharged himself, after agreeing to have 7 days rest in bed.

Please write to The Chief Executive as below, at Broadland District Council demanding an apology from them - Keith could have died due to their unnecessary pressure, when only a month ago he started an appeal against the Council's eviction notice. Clearly not content with that - the Council are now continuing unjustifiable harassment even whilst his appeal is in progress, and on this occasion with an alleged complaint from a neighbour about the trees being damaged - and yet Hallswood Wildlife Reserve is a 10 acre site, so the person who made the complaint must have pretty good eye sight, to spot a few pine trees that had been nibbled by goats, in their compound !!!

Please also make a complaint regarding the attitude of the 3 Council officials - who seemed to be too busy having a joke and a chat with each other to notice that Keith was on board an ambulance and ready to leave for hospital - when they then had to be asked to leave the Reserve.

Please keep letters polite.

The Animals of Hallswood.   A poem by Lyz Metcalfe.

No fear, no pain,

I will not be scared again.

One eye, one leg, one wing or one ear,

I will not be forced away from here.

Kind, treating hands to cuddle me,

Open hearts to love me.

No misery, just total sanctuary

No fear, no shame,

I will not leave here again.

I hop with pride,

I see the world though only one side.

I no longer stand alone,

We stand together, one and all.

Disable we might be,

Alive and happy we are,

Time will tell if I'm to go free.

While I wait, I'm warm and dry with

Love and kindness to keep me company.
