Serving all of Chippewa County, Michigan

Founded in 1993

is a locally run affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing organization. Habitat for Humanity works in partnership with people in need to build and renovate decent, affordable housing. The houses then are sold to those in need at no profit and with no interest charged.

Volunteers provide most of the labor, and individual and corporate donors provide money and materials to build Habitat houses. Partner families themselves invest hundreds of hours of labor - 'sweat equity' - into building their homes and the homes of others. Their mortgage payments go into a revolving Fund for Humanity that is used to build more houses.

In keeping with its mission of building descent affordable homes for low-income families living in sub-standard housing, North Star Habitat broke ground for its seventh house in June of 2000. Habitat offers hardworking families who are unable to afford their own home a hand up not a hand out.

Habitat families must complete sweat equity hours (250 per adult) before they take ownership. Volunteers are always being sought for the project. Volunteers do not necessarily need building skills. Volunteers may also prepare mailings, coordinate volunteers, write grants, develop church relations, fundraise, and many other tasks. Habitat is actively encouraging area churches to become Covenant Churches. Habitat Covenant Church agreements vary from financial support, volunteer assistance, prayer support or a combination of services To volunteer, please call (906) 632-6245 and leave a message with a return phone number.

In order to be considered for a home, families must lack adequate shelter, have a need for more space due to increased family size, or any unusual circumstances. In addition, the family should have adequate income to cover the utilities, taxes, insurance, and maintenance expenses as well as the house payment. To qualify the family must have income which is approximately 50% of the median income for Chippewa County. For an application, please call (906)632-6245 and leave a detailed message or write to us at P.O. Box 122, Sault Ste. Marie, MI. 49783
