LAB #3:          Part 1 due 9/19/03

                        Part 2 due 9/26/03

Hi Class,

For this week's assignment, we will begin working with the spreadsheet Excel. This will be our primary computing tool in class.

The reason we use Excel is primarily because it is ubiquitous (what does that mean?) in the Real World. On college campuses you tend to see many specialty computer software packages, but out in industry most small to midsize firms stick with proven, mass marketed stuff. Excel is a Microsoft product, sold in a "bundle" with MS-Word, Power Point, Access (sometimes), Outlook and Internet Explorer. It is a solid spreadsheet package, with many commonly used functions and some computing capabilities that really surprised me.

This week, we will begin to work with Excel.  Before you start, come by my office to pick up a handout entitled “Excel Fundamentals”.  I will leave copies on the small drafting table right by my office door; please take one and get started.

Please read ALL of the text, and do all the exercises (preferably, in a single Excel spreadsheet). There are 15 exercises distributed throughout these pages, all of which you need to complete by the end of NEXT week. I fully expect this exercise to take you two weeks to finish.

So, for this Friday (Sept. 19), I want you to send me a Progress Report. This should be in the form of a spreadsheet with all of the work from the first SEVEN exercises completed, at least. You need to attach this to an e-mail and send it to me, and to keep it for yourself as well; your assignment next week will be to finish Excel Fundamentals, so if you don't save your work from this week you will have to reinvent the wheel when you do next week's lab.

IMPORTANT NOTE: I need to be able to keep your stuff separated from your classmates stuff in order to give you credit for your work. To that end I want you to name your spreadsheet as follows:

Your initials followed by EXF (this stands for Excel Fundamentals). So, if your name happens to be Cass Nichols, name your spreadsheet CNEXF. Also, make sure that you put your name in the spreadsheet, somewhere near the upper left hand corner.

Good Luck! If you complete your assignment, I will e-mail you that you do not have to come to find me on Friday. If you do not receive a message from me, then find me to determine why I have not responded.

Astrid.
