An Introduction to Aromatherapy
Aromatherapy is mankind's original medicine.  Scents of essential oils induce certain moods and states within the body.   Different aromas trigger different specific responses in the mind and the body.  Some essential oils have direct physical effects and some act on a subconscious level.  For example, Rosemary causes the the conscious mind to become stimulated and alert, while Ylang Ylang produces a state of happiness.
General Precautions & Safety
For the most part, essential oils can be used safely by everyone.  There are some basic guidelines to observe.
Keep out of reach of children and away from pets.
Do not ingest by mouth.
Proceed carefully and with guidance if you have any of the following conditions:
Pregnancy, High Blood Pressure, Epilepsy, Open Wounds,Diabetes, Rashes, Neurological Disorders, Doctor-Prescribed Medications or Homeopathic Remedies.
Don't apply undiluted essential oils directly to skin.  For application to the skin, dilute in a pure vegetable carrier oil, such as almond, grapeseed, jojoba.
Special care is needed when using certain oils which can cause
photosensitivity. Ex: Angelica, Verbena, Bergamot, Orange, Lemon, Lime, Mandarin.
Certain oils have a high level of toxicity, such as:  Pennyroyal, Sage, Fennel and Hyssop.
For treatments of health ailments, please seek diagnosis and recommendations from a licensed medical practitioner.
If you have any questions about the use of essential oils, consult a Certified Aromatherapist.
When used properly, essential oils can be successfully used to treat a multitude of conditions.  From bad skin to a bad mood, the right oil or blend of oils can have great results.  One of the really cool things about essential oils is that in most cases, more than one oil can be used in the treatment of any given condition.  If you don't like the smell of a certain oil, the chances are good that another oil that you find more pleasing will give you the same results.
