Americanism Our Veterans will not be forgotten
Please, Salute our Flag. As this emblem is first in our hearts as loyal Americans, so is it close to our Altar as loyal Elks. The Gentle breezes with Lingering caress kiss the folds of no flag which can compare with it in beauty. There is no such red in budding rose, in falling leaf or sparkling wine; No such white in April blossom, in cresent moon or mountain snow; No such blue in woman's eye, in oceans depth or heavens dome. And no such pagentry of clustering stars and streaming light in all the spectrum of the sea and sky.
The paragraph above is taken from the B.P.O.Elks New Member Initiation Ceramony. To me, it sums up the intense feeling of pride we feel for our Flag and Country. Our Order is dedicated to supporting the men and women who have put their lives on the line to protect our Country and keep us from harm. We will not forget them !

City of Northglenn Healing Fields As the sun rose that Saturday many volunteers were already hard at work setting re-bar rod into the grass bounded by Webster Lake, the Northglenn Rec Center, City Hall and I-25. It was 9-11-2005. The 4200 rods would soon be topped with flags, in rememberance of that day 3 years ago when our world changed forever. As their names were read, the stars and strips would be lovingly set for each civilian who died in the attacks. Then came the names of the "First Responders" as Fire, Police and EMT's led the volunteers in setting these flags. The last names read were the troops, both US and our coalition partners, who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the war against terror. This placing of Old Gory, its staff bearing a yellow ribbon, and the national flag for each allied troop was led by military family members, active duty military and veterans. The impressive dedication ceremonies included comments from Battalion Chief Jack McDonnell NYFD, Governor Owens, and the parents of L/Cpl Thomas Slokum of Thornton, killed in Iraq. A large chunk of I-beam from the World Trade Center gave those present a link to the reason behind this memorial event. This I-beam is to be part of a permanent Memorial to be dedicated on this site 9-11-2006. Our Lodge was well represented at this event by a host of volunteers and sponsored seven flags. Thank you everyone and God Bless America Bobby Heller / Veterans Committee

Protecting Our Freedom There are may young men and women in our Armed Forces who put their lives on the line in the protection of not only our Country and Freedom, but their families and loved ones. They protect us and keep us safe from harm in the sanctity of our homes and firesides. They protect our basic freedoms and the rights we enjoy on a daily basis. They even defend the right to disagree with what they do without question . These men and women do this not for monitary value and anyone who questions their hearts and their convictions will never understand their motives for this is not an action based upon words or thoughts. This is a feeling that is buried deep in their souls and can only be seen in the fire in their eyes I have had the honor of knowing two such individuals through the Lodge and I would like to introduce them to you. If you have anyone you would like to add to this that is related to anyone who is connected to the Elks, please send me the information as I would be honored to post it.
The Northglenn Elks are proud to support our veterans and we are even more proud when our members and family members are serving our Country. We are once again sending one of our own to the front lines of Iraq. She has been real active in our Lodge and she will be missed while sge is gone. She is part of a group that has affectionately earned the nickname "six pack" because the six of them are always together. They have jumped in and helped in many Lodge and club activities. The most recent was the Cinco De Mayo celebration and dinner this year. Joe Ann Gaytan was born December 23rd, 1950 in Alamosa, Colorado. Even back when she was growing up she told everyone she was going to join the Navy. The family later moved to Pueblo where she Graduated from Pueblo East Hight in 1969. She was ready to join then but her brother was serving in Vietnam and he made her promise she would not go until he was home safe. She later moved to Denver and had just started a job with Mountain Bell when she got the call. Her brother had made it home and soon after Joe Ann joined the Army. She was stationed in Germany for 2 years and then returned to the states where she remains in the Active Reserves. She will have 30 years of service as of January 2005. Joe Ann met Alan Gaytan in 1977. They were married July 1st 1978 and are still happily married today. They have been very active in the Reserves and in the community spending much of their time volunteering and helping through several organizations. Joe Ann is the presidenrt of the Woman's Army Corp Chapter #76 in Denver and she is active in the Ladies Auxiliary VFW 7995, The American Legion Post 22 in Northglenn and the American GI Form Chapter 17. Joe Ann's husband Alan is a member of the Northglenn Elks #2438, VFW past Commander, American Legion Post 22 and the American GI Form #17. Joe Ann was called back to active duty in August and she is on her way to Iraq. She had been stationed in Ft Riley, Kansas and is scheduled to depart sometime after the beginning of November. Joe Ann is proud to be serving her country and she thanks everyone for their support, thoughts and prayers. Take care of yourself Joe Ann and remember we love ya !! She will be back Joe Ann was injured in Iraq and is home. She is in good health but still is rehabilitating her injury. We are honored to have her back home and can not say enough to express our gratitude for the sacrifices she and many others have made to keep us save and free from harm. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all who our service men and women and their families.
The Elks have always been a very patriotic organization and we have always supported our vetrans. I am very honored to know this young man who's father I have known for over 30 years. His father and I grew up while our parents were very active in the Elks. His Grand father is now a PER and holds the State Elks Office of Treasurer. His other Grandfather played a major part in making the Hoopshoot program for this state and region what it is today. His father Willie served in the Marines and was assigned to protect two presidents of the United States. Willie now serves as a Trustee at our Lodge. It does not suprise me that Willie's son Chris has followed in his footsteps and now protects our Country from the forces of terrorism and the evil hands that covet terrorists and supply them while torturing and suppressing the people of their own country. Chris William started a 6 month tour on the USS Denver June 9, 2002. During his travels his unit was shot at in Kuwaitt while playing softball between training exersizes. One Marine lost his life and another was injured. Chris became a father on September 29,2002 when his wife Jenn gave birth to their son Christopher Mathew William Jr. Chris Sr. arrived back at Camp Pendleton on December 9, 2002 and was able to celebrate the holidays with his family. On February 4th Chris was called back to duty to serve in Iraq. Chris serves with the First Marine Division, 3rd Btn,2nd Plt, in the AAV unit (Ambious Assault Vehicle). His unit was one of the first to be called to duty in Iraq and they served on the front lines of Operation Iraque Freedom. On April 28th his family received a call stating Chris would be back in the states on home soil by May 10th. Chris returned home in June and it was a welcome site. Welcome home Chris. Words can not express the pride this country has for you and those who served beside you protecting and defending all that we believe in. The trip home was well deserved but all to brief. Chris returned to Iraq in March 2004 for a 7 month tour to protect our freedoms and stabalize a very unstable part of the world bringing sfatey and justice to the people who have lived under the hand of a tyrant for many years. While home Chris was initiated into our Lodge. We are proud to have him as a member in our organization. Chris Returned home as an instructor in California. He is home now and he and his family live in Colorado once again.. God speed to Chris and all who are making the ultimate sacrafice to ensure the safety of all our Country and loved ones at home.
