The Northern Wind Singers originate from the Lake of the Woods area in Ontario, Canada with the majority of the singers coming from North West Angle #33 and Whitefish Bay. The drum group was formed in 1990 by lead singer Gabe Desrosiers, an Ojibway, who is also the main composer of songs and who specializes in the song styles of the Ojibway nation. The group has been honored to attend many powwows througout Indian country either as a host or a participant. Northern Wind has been considered one of the top groups specializing in the songs of the Jingle Dress dance for many years. This unique drum travels extensively throughout Canada and the United States and also has had the occasion to travel over seas to participate in various cultural events and celebrations. This outstanding drum group also has many albums to their credit, the group has approximately 19 albums of which they are very proud of. They have recorded with many recording companies including Sunshine Records, Sweetgrass Records and are currently under the Arbor Records label out of Winnipeg, MB, Canada. This particular drum group is well known not only for their outstanding singing but for their high belief in the creator.
In November 2004 Northern Wind had the honor of winning a Canadian Aboriginal Music Award for Best Traditional Pow Wow album for their album Whispering Winds.
This past November 7, 2008 Northern Wind was the winner of the Best Pow Wow Traditional Album at the Aboriginal Peoples Music Choice Awards for their album aptly titled November Winds |
