PPA Game Recaps for October 10, 2003
Game 1: Northern Steel Lancers 0 vs Erie Admirals 2
Don't let the final score fool you...this game was well within our grasp but give credit to Erie for taking advantage of the opportunities presented to them. We dominated play the entire game putting ourselves in good position to score goals time and time again but lacked the killer instinct to finish on any of our chances. That would come back to haunt us with less than 5 minutes to play when Erie was awarded a controversial handling call outside our box. What clearly looked to everyone to be a shoulder block was called handling by the linesman and Erie was given the free kick just outside the eighteen. They converted cooly on the free kick just out of the reach of Matt Kreutzer's outstretched hands. Erie converted again with little time left off another free kick to end the scoring. A disappointing loss to say the least but we saw many good things to build upon going into the North Stars game later in the afternoon.
Game 2: Northern Steel Lancers 3 vs North Stars 1
We look much the same as we did against Erie creating many chances but unable to cash in with a goal. At the seven minute mark of the first half, Jake Huey is taken down in the penalty area. He takes care of business by placing a great PK high and to the left of the North Stars keeper for a 1-0 lead. We go into half time with time of possession clearly in our favor but with only the one goal lead. We look like we are still at half time when we give up a quick goal right from the start of the half, making the score 1-1. That seems to wake everyone up quickly and we regain the lead seven minutes into the second half when Sean scores from beautiful combination play from Danny and Drew, with Drew getting the assist. We go up 3-1 at the 22 minute mark when Michael makes a gutsy near post run and finishes Ethan's driven corner before a stunned North Star Keeper and defender could react. The game ends at 3-1. A fitting result for the dominance shown in the game by the Lancers and a good response to the earlier game. A mention for the defense...Matt K., Tim, Ethan, Matt S., Sammy, Ryan H. played very tough all afternoon, they will only get better with more games under their belts. Overall, another beautiful fall afternoon in Western Pennyslvania watching the boys play soccer!
A note of thanks to Ron and Linda Huey for cooking out for the Lancer's families in between the two games. We really appreciated the hospitality and it gave the boys and parents some time to relax and hang out together. Thanks again!
