  Hedgehogs are distant relatives of the mole and shrew family.

   
The European hedgehog was introduced into New Zealand in the 1930's.

 
  Approx. half the hedgehog population die before they are a year old.

   
Hedgehogs have approx. 6000 spines on their backs.

    
Bananas are a favoured food, apparently good for their digestive systems.

  
Baby hedgehogs are called Hoglets.

Hedgehogs seen during the day are usually sick or very hungry.

If you must feed hedgehogs ~ meaty cat/dog food is acceptable.

Mankind would have to be the hedgehogs greatest enemy.
Cars, slugs pellets, pesticides and dumped rubbish.
Slug pellets, pesticides and other poisons are passed down the food
chain to the hedgehogs.

SUGGESTION :
If snails and slugs are a problem...
Crush 5 cloves of garlic,
boil them in 2 pints of water, allow to cool, then water onto your garden...
a Hedgehog Friendly solution!


Hedgehogs can swim, climb walls and run at an amazing speed
of up to 2 metres a second!

Adult males grow up to 9" long.

Life expectancy is 2-3 years..and sometimes up to 6.

Adult weight is around 1-2 kg - heaviest in the autumn
