Welcome to the Northern Rivers Region of Australia in New South Wales.

The northern rivers region is served by the Sydney to Brisbane railway line and its branch to Murwillumbah near the coastal Queensland border. For most of its length, this railway is within about 15 kilometres of the coast. However, the two routes fork at Casino, where the Brisbane line takes a more inland route and the Murwillumbah branch heads for Lismore and Byron Bay, terminating at M'bah, which is about 25 kilometres before Tweed Heads on the border.
NB the Casino to Murwillumbah stretch is currently closed by the NSW Government. However, there is coach direct from Casino to Byron and Tweed as an extension of the rail service.
Over the border the Gold Coast region (Qld.) is also serviced by suburban rail from Brisbane. The trip from Sydney to Brisbane/M'bah takes about 14+ hours so an intermediate break is desirable. My choice is Coffs Harbour, the prettiest and most active large town in the region, though Port Macquarie is similar but about 30 km from its nearest railway station. Apart from the aforementioned Casino-Brisbane section, the line takes a slightly inland route between Newcastle and Taree and Coffs Harbour to Lismore. As well as rail, there are regular coaches along the Pacific Highway although most make tiring and time-consuming diversions.
As you have probably noticed elsewhere, I'm not writing this for the benefit of Queenslanders and Victorians. The best thing they can do is stay home and leave the rest of us in peace. No, this is more for you yanks and the healthier European tourist.
References: Users Guide to the Australian Coast. Greg Laughlin Reed New Holland 1997. Not really what it sounds like. Fairly technical description of the environmental forces affecting weather around Oz. Very useful for yachties, I would imagine and informative about solar radiation levels with negative health implications.

welcome The core of the Northern Rivers region is from Nambucca to the Tweed River but we will cover some of the more southerly rivers of the mid North Coast. So let's look at this region extending from midpoint between Sydney and Brisbane (which are ca 600 miles or 960 kms apart), to as far as the Queensland border.

Waterwise, from Sydney to Brisbane might be divided into two distinct regions: predominantly lakes from Sydney to Forster/Tuncurry (about 200 miles or 300 kms) and rivers from Taree to the Tweed (350 miles/550 kms). This makes an aquatic playground stretching over 800 kms, of large lakes and about 8 big rivers.

The climate, particularly in the north, is sub-tropical, and locations such as Byron Bay and Coffs Harbour, the former popular with cockroaches (the human kind) from across the border, are relatively warm in winter and cool in summer. This is pretty much the opposite of a city such as Brisbane, which is unbearably hot and sticky in summer and almost as cold as Sydney in winter, thus resulting in the aforementioned stream of cockroaches (don't blame me; I didn't invent the terminology) from sweaty, overdeveloped south-east Queensland to the more pristine, verdant environment of northern New South Wales.

Don't get me wrong; Brisbane is a city of currently, just the right size, in a scenic river environment which is very pleasant to visit around May or September. The negatives would be living there all year round in a less than ideal climate in close contact with Queenslanders.

The Australian holiday season starts revving up in late November with stuvacs (students going wild after exams) and tapers off in February with people returning to work and students enrolling for the new academic year. This means that Queensland's Gold Coast region at the top end of the northern rivers is crammed with obnoxious teenage students determined to make their insignificant presence felt. For you yanks, think of Florida spring break.

Byron Bay is almost as bad, but, as well, it has the aforementioned cockroaches. So, the pleasant time of year to visit is spring and autumn. Winter is when the roads are chockers with slow-moving Victorian geriatrics heading for Rockhampton and Cairns or anywhere that's warmer than Melbourne.

As mentioned, travel times by train are slow; I did it recently but had learned my lesson from the trip down by sleeper, getting very little sleep; thus on the way back northwards I broke the journey at Coffs Harbour for a couple of nights, availing myself of the great bistro at Coffs R.S.L.

The ideal climate of the Northern Rivers is represented by the toothsome trio: Port Macquarie, Coffs and Byron Bay. Being most northerly, Byron is the warmest and most socially active. Ideal climate is defined in terms not too hot a summer and not too cool in winter.
Travel by car does shorten the trip a reasonable amount over that of the train, though under 10 hours from Sydney to Byron is not possible without severe risk of putting a few points on your license. The advantage of any car applies: flexibility of route.
There are some great diversions as mentioned elsewhere. The Laurieton to Port diversion and the Maclean via Lawrence are my favourites, although via Tucabia I once came across the roadside spectacle of an eagle dismembering a kangaroo. Other possibilities are Russel Crowe country or the almost mandatory drop in to Byron Bay, where you might run into Livvie or Linda, but don't hold your breath, and don't upset Russ. N.B. THE N.S.W. GOVERNMENT, IN ITS WISDOM AND WITH THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT STARVING IT OF FUNDS, HAS DECIDED TO LIMIT OPERATION OF THE MURWILLUMBAH RAIL BRANCH.

Physical Activities.
White water Rafting, Surfing, Horse Riding, Touring, Fishing, Whale-Watching.

Cultural Activities.
Beer Drinking, Jazz Festivals, Marijuana Demos, and the occasional musical and theatrical performance.

My choice for eating is Ballina RSL where the evening view onto the river from the bistro is wont to include fisherman in tinnies and the odd dolphin gliding by.
