General Information
    All "Open" livestock exhibitors must have their animals on the fairgrounds no later than 6:00 p.m. on July 30, 2004. Animals will be released at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 7, 2004. All livestock exhibitors (including 4-H families and leaders) who wish to park a camper or set up a tent in livestock area, must register with the livestock superintendent and pay the rental fee determined by the fair. All campers must be parked in fair designated campsite and als follow all rules established by D.H.S. for campgrounds at agricultural fairs. All campsite reservations must be approved by the livestock superintendent, prior to the fair. The superintendent will assign your campsite, so please do not setup your camper or tent without first getting your assigned site. Campsites will not be assigned before the fair, so please don't ask. It is not guaranteed that you will have the same site every year. Cruelty to animals will not be tolerated.

A. ALL OPEN & 4-H LIVESTOCK EXHIBITORS WILL BE RELEASED AT 5:00 P.M. ON SATURDAY, AUGUST 7.  This is later than in the past years, please be prepared. (An exception will be granted by the superintendent, only for open exhibitors who are registered at other fairs beginning the following day.) Leaving early will result in forfeit of premiums. This includes rabbits.
B. 4-H and FFA members may enter an open livestock exhibit, however, these animals may not be shown in the 4-H or FFA Livestock shows. This will be watched closely. Non 4-H and FFA exhibitors will be given first priority for invitations.
C. Prior years show for goats will be replaced by a herdman's (exhibitors) contest and will pay a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place premium.
D. Open Beef, Open Large Animal Exhibit, and Open Small Animal Exhibit will be limited to two entries each.
E. Open Sheep Contest entries will increase to six, and will pay a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th premium.
F. All Open Exhibitors must perform a 1/2 hour demonstration each day of the fair. The superintendent will prepare this schedule prior to the pair and post it.
G. Open & 4-H Livestock exhibitors are encouraged to bring an extra animal for display in Old MacDonalds farm. Please help support this exhibit. If interested, please call the livestock
superintendent.
H. rain or Shine - a potluck supper will be held in the new 4-H building for all Open and 4-H Livestock exhibitors and other participants, on Friday, August 6 at 6:00 p.m.
I. No vehicles or trailers will be allowed to park or travel between the 4-H barn and the sheep barn, or between the rabbit display and the racetrack.
J. Open livestock exhibitors will be selected by the invitation of livestock superintendent. To request an invitation, please contact the superintendent.
K. Open BEEF, DAIRY, GOAT and SHEEP are open to both grade and registered female animals. state law requires that all male animals shown at agricultural fairs be registered, and papers will be checked.
L. An Open "LARGE" and "SMALL" animal contest will be held to attract new livestock exhibits. These exhibits will be limited to 2 herds/flocks for each category.
M. No campers will be allowed to park between the first cattle carn and the racetrack.

Liability Insurance : Livestock owners must have a certificate of general liability insurance on any animal you bring on the fairgrounds.

SPECIAL NOTICES:
    
The Superintendent of Livestock and his appointed committee has full authority over the entire livestock area, and his decision will be final and binding on all livestock exhibitors. Livestock are: all cattle, sheep, swine, rabbits, poultry  and/or any other animals brought into the livestock area.
     All livestock exhibitors must obey the Rules Governing the Prevention and Control of Certain Diseases of Domestic Animals and Poultry established by the Commissioner of Agriculture and regulated by the maine Department of Agriculture, Food and Rural Resources, Division of Animal Health and Industry. (For a copy of these rules, contact the livestock superintendent. A copy will be on file in the livestock superintendent's office.)

Bedding - Hay
     Shavings or straw will be provided for all livestock exhibitors. hay will be available to purchse from an approved vendor by the livestock committee.

Open Dairy, Beef and Sheep Contests
    
The purpose of this contest format will be to create a more attractive, more educational, and more interactive exhibit for fairgoers, and therefore entrants will be judged accordingly.
     The entries in each category will be judged for their overall exhibit, and premiums will be paid accordingly. Judging will be ongoing throughout the fair week by a team of judges appointed by the superintendent. they wil use the following criteria to make their selection:
    1. GENERAL APPEARANCE: 35%
        a. daily appearance of animals and stalls.
        b. daily appearance of exhibitors
        c. neatness of equipment and tack
    2. EDUCATIONAL VALUE: 35%
        a. signs, names, cards, etc.
        b. level of representation of the animals and industry represented.
        c. cooperation with 4-H and FFA judging contests
        d. demonstrating the preparation of animals for show
    3. INTERACTION WITH FAIRGOERS: 30%
       a. time spent with the exhibit during fair hours
       b. level of willingness to talk to fairgoers about the animals and industry represented.
       c. time spent displaying animals in the show ring during fair hours.

Division 1 - Open Beef Cattle
    
Open Beef Cattle exhibitors are required to display a herd of no less than 8 cattle consisting of a minimum of two calves, 2 heifers, and 2 cows. The remaining may be of any age. Exhibitors will be limited to one make animal that is less than 6 months old. All exhibitors are required to make their animals available for 4-H and FFA judging contests. two entries by invitation in this class.
       Premiums:
          1st place overall dairy exhibit             $1000.00
          2nd place overall dairy exhibit              $900.00
          3rd place overall dairy exhibit              $800.00

Division 3 - Sheep
    
Open Sheep exhibitors are required to display a flock of no less than 8 sheep consisting of a minimum of 2 female lambs under 1 year old, 2 yearling lambs over one year of age. The remaining may be of any age. All exhibitors are required to make their animals available for 4-H and FFA judging contests. Six entries by invitation in this class.
     Premiums:
         1st place overall sheep exhibit             $600.00
         2nd place overall sheep exhibit            $550.00
         3rd place overall sheep exhibit             $500.00
         4th place overall sheep exhibit             $450.00
         5th place overall sheep exhibit             $400.00
         6th place overall sheep exhibit             $350.00

Division 4 - Open Goat
    Open goat exhibitors are required to disply a herd of no less than 6 goats, consisting of a minimum of 2 male or female goats less than six months of age, and 2 female goats over one year of age. The remaining may be of any age. All exhibitors are required to make their animals available for 4_h and FFA judging contests and demonstrations. Four entries by invitation in this class.

         3rd place overall goat exhibit               $120.00
         4th place overall goat exhibit               $105.00

"Large" and "Small" Animal Exhibit Contests
   
The purpose of these contests are to attract and display a mix of both large and small animals that will add to the educational and inteactive aspect of the livestock area.
     The two entries ineach category will be judged for their overall exhibit, and premiums will be paid for 1st and 2nd place. judging will be ongoing throughout the fair week by a team of judges appointed by the superintendent. They will use the following criteria to make their selection:
1. GENERAL APPEARANCE: 35%
     a. daily appearance of animals and stalls
     b. daily appearance of exhibitors
     c. neatness of equipment and tack

Division 5 - Open Large Animal Exhibit
    The open large animal contests is open to draft horses, oxen, llamas, buffalo, beefalo, exotic breeds of cattle and other animals approved by the livestock superintendent. Open large animal exhibitors are required to display a herd/flock of no less than 6 animals, of which at least 2 must be mature. The remaining may be of any age. Contact the superintendent for special barn/pen/cage requirements.
      Premiums:
          1st place overall large animal exhibit             $1,000.00
          2nd place overall large animal exhibit               $900.00

Division 6 - Open Small Animal Exhibit
    
The open small animal contests are open to miniature horses, draft ponies, exotic sheep or goats, fallow or red deer, mules, donkeys, emus, and other animals approved by the superintendent. Open small animal exhibitors are required to display a herd/flock of no less than 6 animals, of which at least 2 must be mature. The remaining may be of any age. Contact the superintendent for special barn/pen/cage requirements. Two entries by invitation in this class.
     Premiums:
         1st place overall small animal exhibit                 $400.00
         2nd place overall small animal exhibit                $350.00

Division 7 - Cattle Birthing Exhibit
    
The superintendent will invite exhibitors to display six cows that are scheduled to give birth during the fair dates. The fair will pay a premium of $100.00 for each cow that gives birth during the fair. Please contact the livestock superintendent if you have a cow you would like to enter in this exhibit.

Division 8 - Penned or Caged Exotic Animal Exhibit
    
This Penned or Caged Exotic Animal exhibit is open to entrants who meet the following minimum qualifications:
     a. The entrant must provide their own tent/pen/cage or other required materials for a safe outside display.
     b. The entrant must have all required licenses to own and display the animals they exhibit.
     c. The complete display must include a minimum of at least twent-five animals, with at least 4 types (not  
         breeds) of animals represented.  (exotic birds may be displayed but will not be counted in the twenty-five          minimum.)
     d. The display must be interactive, educational and allow fairgoers, (especially children) to interact directly
         with some of the animals.
    The two entries in this class will be judged for 1st, and 2nd place. Judgig will be ongoing throughout the fair wekk by a team of judges appointed by the superintendent. they will use the following criteria to make a selection:
1. GENERAL APPEARANCE: 35%
     a. daily appearance of animals and display area
     b. daily appearance of exhibitors
     c. neatness of equipment and tack
     d. cooperation with fair officials
2. EDUCAITONAL VALUE: 355
     a. signs, names, cards, etc.
     b. uniqueness of the exotic animal displayed
     c. demonstration of history of the animal
3. INTERACTION WITH FAIRGOERS: 30%
     a. time spent with the exhibit during fair hours
     b. level of willingness to talk with fairgoers
     c. accessibility for children interaction
