This collection of photographs shows a sequence of events that occur, beginning with Tessa's bathtime. She doesn't really mind having a bath, once the chase has ended around the house. After her bath is completed and she has been towel dried, she runs about the house looking for a spot to roll around. The first place she goes is usually in my bed, where she turns back the bedding, and commences pawing and rolling. When she's done making my bed a damp mess, she returns to the living room, where her next target is the sofa. After a half hour of rolling, she gets a bisquet and settles down for a thorough brushing, and then a nap. |

Tessa is the first dog that Alex and I have owned within our family. When I brought her home, I didn't know very much about the Shih Tzu breed. I only knew that she was cute and wanted to go home with me. She has been a part of our family for 2 1/2 years now and during that time, I have learned much about her breed. Though, I still rely heavily on my Veterinarian and his staff, along with Tessa's groomer, for advice and information.
The Shih Tzu breed is a high maintenance breed, and I wouldn't recommend this breed to anyone who isn't willing to invest the time. Their coat requires a great deal of work as their hair grows very fast and can become matted in a very short time. If you have seen this breed on the Dog Shows, you might have noticed how long their hair is. While their long manes, and ponytails are impressive, we must remember that they have professional groomers, who are paid to brush out these dogs several times a day, to maintain that coat. Because of the time and expense required to maintain the long coat, Tessa makes many visits to her groomer for trimmings.
A typical day at the groomers, consists of a bath, trimming, nail cutting, ear cleaning and maintenance, flea treatment (if necessary), and occasionally a little doggy bling. Although there are several groomers in my area who charge less of a fee then what I pay, I am happy to pay a little more because Tessa's groomer is located in the Veternarian's clinic. Under the watchful eye of my Veternarian, I know that I can trust that the shop conditions are ultimate.
On average, Tessa goes to the groomer about once every 10 weeks. She should go more often, but, time is money and money is time. It is crucial though, that she receive a bath at home once a week, and a brushing every other day or so. |

Use a good brand of shampoo and conditioner to bath your Shih Tzu. I use Pantene or Thermasilk. |

Wash their face and eyes daily, to remove any drainage and food particles. |
