Me!
Will you work with the children of
the congregation?
"No," he said at twenty. "I don't have any
children in the congregation. It’s not my responsibility. Let the parents do
it!"
"You'll have to excuse me," she said at thirty. "I
spend all day, every day, with preschoolers. They're driving me crazy. I need a
vacation from child-care on Sunday and Wednesday. Let someone else teach the
children!"
"I really can’t" he said at forty. "Our
children are finally away from home. My wife and I want to enjoy travel and
relaxation. We have agreed to leave our weekends free for whatever we want to
do. I am sure you can find more reliable people to teach!"
"It’s out of the question," she said at fifty.
"I'm a grandparent, you know. Small children make me nervous. I really
think teaching is the responsibility of those who have children in the Bible
classes. Let them do it!"
"What’s the matter with kids today?" they asked in
bewilderment at sixty. "The children seem wild and untaught. Why doesn't
somebody in the congregation do something about them?"

160 Souls
It was a blessing to have so many precious souls in
Worship last Sunday morning. For many it reminded us of past times when the
building was full each and every Lord’s day. I heard many make the statement,
“I can remember when we had this many all the time.”
Last Sunday was a reminder of good times as well as an
indictment that somewhere along the line we dropped the ball. The question that
is on the lips of many Elders, Deacons, Preachers and Members through out our
land is what has happened to our congregation? Why have we become so small? How
can we motivate our fellow Christians to become involved and help reach the
non-Christians in our area? A more concerning question that plagues my mind is,
“How long will it be before we lock up the building for the last time?”
To look around our own area makes me sad when I observe
congregations that have closed their doors or are literally dying. Sometimes I
feel like the apostle Paul, “I have been in labor and hardship, through many
sleepless nights, in hunger and thirst, often without food, in cold and
exposure. Apart from such external things, there is the daily pressure on me of concern for all
the churches.” (2 Corinthians 11:27-28) As one studies the various letters
written by Paul to the congregations we can see that he had a great love for
these Brothers and Sisters. He truly desired that they stand firm in their
faith and not allow Satan to silence the congregation. Paul also had a great
concern for those who had not heard the Gospel. Even alone, “at
We have a great opportunity today to reach out to people
in our area with the gospel. In about six weeks the first mailing of House to
House/Heart to Heart will reach the home of our friends and family. This will
open doors for you to share your faith with interested individuals. There are
also Bible Courses, Tracts, CD’s and Home Studies that we can be made available
to anyone who desires them. It is not the lack of material or the lack of
opportunity it is the lack of sowing and cultivating. Just to send HTH to our
friends and family will do nothing unless we are active in utilizing this
opportunity. The question each of us must ask ourselves is, “Am I concerned for
this congregation? Am I concerned for the lost souls of my friends and family
who are not Christians?” The answer to that question will directly affect the
future of this congregation and the future abode of your friends and family.
Do you desire the congregation here in Sentinel to bring
souls to Christ or to die on the proverbial vine? Remember the word of Jesus:

"I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser.
2 "Every
branch in Me that does not bear fruit, He takes away; and every branch that
bears fruit, He prunes it so that it may bear more fruit.

"You are already clean because of the
word which I have spoken to you.
4. "Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot
bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you unless
you abide in Me.

"I am the vine, you are the branches;
he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you
can do nothing.
6 "If anyone
does not abide in Me, he is thrown away as a branch and dries up; and they
gather them, and cast them into the fire and they are burned.

"If you abide in Me, and My words abide
in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.

"My Father is glorified by this, that
you bear much fruit, and so prove to be My disciples.
