Welcome to
Our Flat Stanley Project
Mrs. Jennings' 2nd Grade Class
Danville, Illinois
This year, we are participating in a project based on the book Flat Stanley by Jeff Brown. The story is about a young boy named Stanley who wakes up one morning to find that his bulletin board has fallen on him during the night. Luckily, Stanley is not hurt. However, he has been flattened to the thickness of one half inch. As a result of his new shape, Stanley is able to have many interesting adventures such as flying like a kite, slipping into a sewer grating, and traveling to California by air mail. It is this last adventure upon which the Flat Stanley Project is based.
Each of the students in our second grade class decorated a paper Flat Stanley and mailed him to someone living in a different place. We asked the hosts to keep Stanley for a visit so that he could learn about their home city and state (and in some cases, country). We asked that after they had had a chance to show Stanley around and teach him a little bit, they send him back to Danville with some evidence of his trip (a letter, postcard, picture, etc,).
Through this project, the children are learning geography and written communication skills. The children have been very excited about writing and receiving letters and learning about different parts of our country and world.
