"What any person in the world can learn, almost all persons can learn if provided with appropriate prior and current conditions of learning." Benjamin Bloom
I believe that all students can successfully master the 3rd grade curriculum. My job as their teacher is to teach in such a way to support their learning. If my students are unsuccessful than I need to rethink the way that I am teaching them. Not all students are gifted in the same areas. Some enjoy language and social studies or math and science, while other enjoy fine arts. In our class, we integrate all the subjects so that all students are actively engaged in their learning. We study our math facts as we sing "Multiplication Rocks". We illustrate stories and poems that we have written. As we study history, we read historical fiction books in language arts that add to our understanding of the times. I believe that students must be actively involved in their learning. This includes giving the students plenty of time to manipulate concrete objects in math and science so that the students can activate their prior knowledge and construct meaning into their learning.
Computers are incredibly fast, accurate, and stupid. Human beings are incredibly slow, inaccurate and brilliant. Together they are powerful beyond imagination. Albert Einstein
Technology is an instuctional tool to be used by an educator to fully equip students to meet their future. The abiltiy of our students to effectively use computers will in some way dictate their futures. All over the world, people may not have clean, usable water or heating and air conditioning but they have computers. Computers continually evolve and our students must keep up with the evolution. A computer should be used as a tool to accomplish a task. Any tool can be misused whether it is irrelevant fill-in-the-blank worksheets or computers. The manner in which the tool is used dictates its long term role in a classroom. Technology use in the classroom should never take the place of an educator. It should instead be utilized as a part of a holistic view of educating children. Classroom computers are an integral part of differentiating instruction based upon the needs of individual learning styles, multiple intelligences, and cognitive differences on the part of our students.
