February 2005

Presidents message

Here it is, already February; the sun feels warmer and the days are getting longer. My holidays included a visit to Vancouver, where I did enjoy running around without boots. But after a few days amid the rain and moss, I desparately missed the brilliant sunshine we take for granted on a cold winter's day.

Over this time, some of your executive members have created a constitution for the Society, as well as updating the bylaws. Our programming coordinator had completed a varied list of speakers for 2005. Our convention representatives have been assisting the organizing committee with the finetuning of preparations for August's Ontario Horticultural Association gathering.

So welcome 2005 - it should be another exciting year!

IMPORTANT NOTICE - CHANGE OF LOCATION FOR THIS MEETING ONLY!!

Due to the flu outbreak at Casselllholme, the February 23rd meeting will be held at the Rebecca Lodge, 1272 Algonquin Avenue. The entrance is at the back (burgundy canopy by the back entrance to the CIBC bank), and is on the main floor. There is parking at the back by the fence (do not park in the tenant's parking), or on the streets around it. You can access the back of the building off Lansdowne, take Burrows street, then left on Welch to Highland Rd. Alternately you can turn off Hillcrest by Kentucky Fried Chicken, then turn right on Highland.

GARDENING GUIDE

Mid February to mid March

Beat the February blues and satisfy those green thumb urges by propogating indoor plants from stem cuttings

Check if houseplants are potbound and repot if necessary

Fertilize houseplants on a regular basis. Also try a spring tonic of 2 tsp of Epsom Salts to 1 litre of water

Sort through seed packets left over from last year. Check viability by putting a few seeds in a moist paper towel in a plastic bag and place in a warm spot for about a week

Take seeds to our annual Seed Exchange

Check progress of potted bulbs for forcing

Start seeds of annuals , tomatoes and peppers in early March

Cut branches of Forsythia and Pussy Willow for forcing into bloom. Split the branches up about 2 inches so they will absorb more water. Soak in a bucket of warm water overnight and arrange in a vase of warm water. In a few days they will burst into bloom from the indoor warmth and light

Exercise to get those muscles in shape for spring gardening, starting now will be less of a shock to the system and help prevent injuries

O.H.A. 2005 Convention

We will be taking the names of people interested in volunteering for the August Convention. Many hands will make light work and your involvement for even just a few hours is extremely important. Please sign up to volunteer, even if you are not sure how you can help - there will be something for everyone. Please take a few moments to fill out the Volunteer Form in this Green Thumb and either mail it in or better still, bring it with you to the next meeting. These forms will be collected from all the Societies and past on to our Convention Committee for organizational purposes.

We will also be taking orders (and $$$) for Convention Volunteer T-shirts, in small, medium, large and x-large - just $15.00. The T-shirts are optional attire for volunteers, however the purchase of a T-shirt will help defer the costs of the Convention as well as make it easy for visitors and delegates to know who we are as a District.

To celebrate OHAs 100th anniversary in 2006, the Fundraising Committee is offering the Centennial Tulip of the Ontario Horticultural Association, a breathtaking deep purple Triumph Hybrid that will bloom year after year in your home and community beds. The Triumph is a cross between the long-stemmed Darwin Tulip and short-stemmed Early Tulips and should rise to about 18 inches. It is recommended as an excellent pot plant and will mingle beautifully with softer colours like apricot and lemon yellow. The tulips colour signifies loyalty and longevity and they are mid season blooming. A photo of this tulip is available online at http://www.gardenontario.org/act/fun.php . Pat Madill is taking orders now; the cut off date to order them is March 2005. They will be shipped out to us by early September 2005.
